Turbo, Geneva College’s mascot, participated in Family Reading Week at Union Elementary School in New Castle, Pa. The Golden Tornado assisted adjunct professor Stephanie Schindel in a puppet presentation promoting literacy and creative character development in writing. Schindel, a member of the Department of Psychology, Counseling, and Human Services, integrated self-esteem concepts into the puppets’ dialogue. Schindel has been using puppets as a tool for communicating biblical and developmental lessons to young children for over eight years.
Students warmly received the guests and asked numerous questions about Turbo’s design and role at Geneva. With Schindel’s assistance, Turbo responded to the enthusiastic crowd by miming.
The event marked Turbo’s first appearance as an educational tool in the local school districts. Future plans include more Turbo sightings at school, community, and church events.
