Parents and Guardians FAQ

  1. What should I attend? Parents are just as much a part of the Geneva community as the students, so we have crafted Move-In Day considering your crucial part in this transition period. Parents are welcome to be a part of all activities on Move-In Day from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., including the Opening Welcome. At the end of the Opening Welcome, there will be a time for parents to say good bye to their students (so emotionally prepare yourself) after which, the students will leave to meet their Welcome Week groups. There will then be a short Parent Session presenting relevant information on important resources and campus events. Check out the Welcome Week schedule for specific information.

  2. What should I expect? Move-in starts at 9 a.m. on August 21 and officially ends at 1 p.m. When you arrive on campus, people will greet you and direct you to the Student Center for check-in. On the way, you will pass the Parent Welcome Tent, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff and volunteers will be available to give you information and answer questions. Following check-in, you will be directed to the parking lot for your student’s residence hall where crews of people will be ready to help move belongings into the room.

  3. What do I do all day? Once your student’s belongings have been moved into the room, many parents choose to help unpack and get the room organized. This often involves a trip to Walmart or Giant Eagle to stock up on some last minute supplies. If you need directions to these or other stores, stop by the Parent Welcome Tent for directions. Your Geneva student can swipe their meal card for lunch in Alexander Dining Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. You and all other guests are welcome to purchase lunch at the door for $5/person. If you haven’t purchased class books yet, this is also a good time to visit the Campus Store. The Opening Session begins at 3 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse. Students are expected and parents are invited to attend this inaugural event of Welcome Week. At the end of the Opening Welcome, parents say good-bye and then attend the Parent Session for information on important resources and campus events.

  4. If I have a scheduling conflict, is it a problem if I can’t stay all day? While the events are mandatory for students, parents may choose to stay through the Parent Session or head home. We understand that many of you will have a long drive home or other responsibilities. Since athletes, band members, Academy participants and Freshman Expedition attendees move onto campus early, there are many students that will not have a parent or guardian with them at the Opening Session.

  5. If my student is moving on campus early, should I attend Move-In Day? Many of our students will be moving into their rooms prior to August 21 because they are an athlete, band member, Academy participant or attending Freshman Expedition. The coach or coordinator of their program will communicate directly with them regarding the date and time of their move-in. Early arriving students will move into their actual room for the semester so there is no need to return on August 21. However, you are more than welcome to join in the day’s festivities.

  6. What is the Parent Welcome Tent? We invite you to stop by the Parent Welcome Tent during the day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Becky Phillips, Associate Director of Church and Parent Relations, along with parent volunteers will be happy to provide information, answer questions and provide a gathering place for parents throughout the day.
