Overview

The English department bases its curriculum, teaching and other endeavors on the belief that human beings, created in the image of God, are themselves creative and that language and literature are important dimensions of their creativity.  We teach, pursue scholarship and write out of a commitment to the power of language as expressed and reflected in the Word of God; we encourage our students to do the same.  We believe that Christians are called to evaluate as well as appreciate language.  Thus, we seek to develop students’ skills in hearing, reading, writing and critically responding.

Mission
“Christ calls a name and He images the same; He figures, patterns, and designs.
We read, we write, we watch, and we wait, And our words with the Word He aligns.”
    -Dr. Paul Kilpatrick

Through the experience of literature and related arts, through the clear and creative use of language and through understanding language itself, our students come to:

  • Connect their word and their reading with the Word.
  • Experience, express, and testify to the wonder of the glory of God, His work and the work of His creatures.
  • Comprehend and lament the brokenness of this fallen world.
  • Seek wisdom in humility.
  • Honor God in the use of language and in responding to others’ use of language.
