Intramural Philosophy

Campus Recreation’s Learning Outcomes and Objectives:

  • Physical Fitness and Wellness:
Our desire is that students might start to develop healthy habits such as regular exercise, balance between work and leisure activities, and appreciation for the role physical activity plays in social, mental, and physical health.
  • Character Development:
Our desire is to nurture character development on two levels. Introspection: students build self-concept and esteem through competitive play with other students and positive interactions with Intramural Sports staff. Demonstrative: students are challenged to clarify their values by demonstrating behaviors that uphold and affirm their beliefs, convictions, and respect for Christian teachings.
  • Healthy Competition:
Our desire is to develop a culture of respect and fair play in the context of healthy competition. Students should learn respect for competitors and team members, as well as accept the supervision and authority of the team captain and intramural staff members. Students will also learn how to work together to achieve positive group goals.
  • Conflict Management:
Our goal is that students will learn to apply Christian principles and sensibilities in managing conflict. This learning objective is fostered by student participants be asked to actively resolve conflicts with the assistance in mediation by the intramural staff. Student participants are asked to be accountable for their actions on and off the field of play.
  • Leadership Development:
Our desire is that students learn how to clearly develop and communicate group goals and motivate others toward goal achievement. This outcome is supported through the structure of the Intramural Sports program management team. The structure affords students the opportunity to move from player to participant, to captain, to facilitator/coordinator.
