December 2010

A message from Becky Phillips, Director of Alumni Relations

Becky Phillips

December has arrived with the sights, smells and sounds of Christmas all around us. For Geneva′s students, this means that finals are just around the corner and class projects are in their final stages. They are eagerly anticipating their Christmas break and time away from books and studying. No doubt they are envisioning mornings sleeping in, time with family, late nights with friends and so much more.

Our current student body represents 35 states and 9 countries. They will be taking the love of Christ into communities, whether they are returning home, spending time with friends or traveling to other parts of the world.

As with our students, Geneva alumni are also spread throughout the world which means that they will be celebrating in all types of weather and different traditions. Those in Australia will be exchanging presents on a summer day while those in Minnesota will likely have a very white Christmas. My memories of Christmas in California include memories of bike rides and walks around the Rose Bowl.

The holidays bring times of great joy. The delight of children as they unwrap a package to find a much desired toy, listening to favorite Christmas carols, watching Christmas movies, time with family and so much more.

But the brokenness created by sin touches this season as it touches every part of our lives. For some, this is a difficult time of remembering loved ones who have died, mourning over damaged relationships or not having the means to provide a Christmas dinner.

This is the brokenness that Jesus Christ came to the earth to redeem. Our broken lives are made whole through Christ′s birth, shed blood on the cross and His victory over death through the resurrection. As Geneva alumni, we have been challenged to see creation, fall and redemption as we view the world. Our professors wove that worldview as they taught us how to live in this world.

The busyness of the season can make it difficult for us to take time to contemplate the gift of ultimate love that God gave to us through His son. May you experience God′s love through both the joy and the brokenness that you experience in your life and may others see God′s love living in and through our alumni and students.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love each other, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”
