Christmas through the years at Geneva

Christmas at Geneva...through the years

For nearly 164 years, Geneva College has been providing a challenging, biblically based education. Generations of students have come to our campus to experience Christ-centered academics, as well as participate in God-honoring student activities and athletic programs. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior this month, we take a look at some snapshots of these students during Christmases past—their thoughts about this blessed season, community service projects and special events—as revealed in the pages of The Cabinet, Geneva′s weekly student-led newspaper.

December 19, 1941

“At present as far as we are able to find there are about 25 Geneva graduates and students who have been drafted. …”

“Harvey McClung was the first Geneva graduate to be killed in action in this present war.  McClung was located with the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. …”

“Anxious indeed was the family of Ren Martin after the Pearl Harbor incident. ... No word was received by his family until Friday evening, December 12, when a cablegram arrived with the message: ‘Am Okay, Ren.′”

December 7, 1951

“The annual Beaver County Christmas Parade … marked one of the biggest civic affairs of the season.  Sponsored and promoted by the merchants of Beaver Falls, the parade was led by the Geneva College Gold and White Band. …”

---------

“… a mobile blood unit (will) be in Beaver County sometime late this month or early in January. … Blood drawn by these units goes solely for military needs in Korea and stockpiling for civilian defense.”

December 15, 1961

“Christmas arrived early this year for thirty young orphans of the Beaver County Children′s Home.  It came last Wednesday evening when the Student Senate held its annual Children′s Christmas Party. …”

-------------

“Katherine Williams, a lovely red haired soprano, presented to Geneva students a most enjoyable Christmas program on Friday, December 8.”

December 16, 1971

“Debbie Lewis … adds to the children′s world of merriment as a talking Christmas tree at Kaufmann′s Department Store in Rochester. … Debbie sits in the trunk of a large Christmas tree equipped with microphone and instruments to control the movement of the tree. ... Debbie as the talking Christmas tree has been asked out about four times but had to turn her admirers down. …”

----------

“On Friday, January 7, at 6:30 and 9:00 in SE 15 the movie ‘You′re a Big Boy Now′ will be shown.  It is written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and deals with beguiled youth and bewildered adults.”

December 11, 1981

“There is still an opportunity for students to join the group going to the Beaver County Geriatric Center tonight. The group will be meeting at 5:44 p.m. in the basement of Old Main to package the gifts and leave for the Center. The evening will conclude with a brief time of sharing and hot chocolate in the lounge of Young Hall.”

December 13, 1991

“This Week Only: Christmas Caroling around Campus and at the President′s House, where we′ll be having refreshments…Following the Caroling, we′ll be having our annual (!) Christmas celebration in Skye Lounge.  Come prepared with requests for your favorite Christmas Carols.  (Sorry, we don′t have overheads for ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer′ or ‘Suzy Snowflake.′).”

December 7, 2001

“(Recently), Student Services′ Campus and Community Ministries and McKee Hall began their drive to help ‘Angel Tree Kids.′… Each Christmas season, it has been a Geneva tradition to buy clothing and a toy for 50 of these children. …”

December 9, 2011

"The 74th Annual Genevans Christmas Concert marked both a beginning and end: it was the world premiere of Pamela Marshall′s piece 'Shepherds and Angels' as well as Dr. Robert Copeland′s final Christmas concert as director. The concert was performed on December 2 and 3 at First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Falls to a huge audience, including composer Pamela Marshall herself."

Student Spotlight

"Before Geneva...I really was unsure about my future, probably because I was trying to be in control of it. Now coming to the Lord, I have faith about my future. It′s in His hands, not mine. I feel now that I am more prepared for the future. It is through Geneva the Lord did his work on my life.'"
