Madelyn E. Toliver

MSOL Program Celebrates 15 Years

The Geneva College Master of Science in Organization Leadership (MSOL) Program has been impacting the lives of people like Madelyn E. Toliver MSOL ′07 for 15 years. By giving working adults the opportunity to further their professional growth and advancement through the study, research and application of leadership and organizational theory, the MSOL program has been helping students improve their leadership skills and influence their workplace, community and family.

When the program was developed, the vision was that, by God′s grace, the experience would be transformational for those who would graduate from the program. The testimony of Madelyn demonstrates the achievement of this vision. She says, “My MSOL degree has opened up opportunities beyond what I had ever imagined.”

In addition to her work in the human resources department at PNC Financial Service Group, Inc., Madelyn is also an adjunct professor at Carlow University. She teaches a political science course entitled “Introduction to Women and Leadership”. Madelyn says this role has allowed her to “work with current leaders of tomorrow who want to strengthen their skills. The students leave with a greater understanding of their leadership style and how to be a more effective leader.” Similar to her own experience in the MSOL program, her students examine what characteristics shape a strong leader and evaluate their own leadership style.

Madelyn also says, “On a personal note, I have gained a greater appreciation for spiritual and effective leadership. I can recognize more quickly individuals that lead with authority, but lack integrity, compassion and a general understanding of others. Through my MSOL experience, I have gained a greater desire to impact others with my leadership. I possess great zeal and determination to serve others through servant leadership.”

Madelyn joins the ranks of 812 current MSOL alumni. In February 1996, the first MSOL cohort launched with six students. This June, the 75th cohort started in Johnstown, Pa. Classes also meet in Cranberry, Butler, New Castle, Monroeville, Pittsburgh, South Hills and on Geneva′s main campus. Four new cohorts are slated to begin October 2010 through March 2011.

Dr. Jim Dittmar, the Chair of the Department of Leadership Studies, pioneered the program with the help of numerous individuals. In celebration of the 15 year anniversary he says, “To all of our graduates, faculty and staff, past and present, we say a very heartfelt ‘thank you.′ Through it all, God has been THE source of strength and provision for those of us associated with the administration and delivery of the MSOL program.”
