Campus improvements are a priority this summer

The Student Center is getting major improvements this summer including the exterior panels getting painted.

Geneva College is getting a face lift this summer. Over the last few years, Geneva has increased the capital budget for renovations from $800,000 to $1.8 million. “It is important that our buildings are aesthetically pleasing and up-to-date for our faculty, staff, students and visitors,” says Tim Baird, Associate Vice-President of Operations and Human Resources. This past year a committee of Geneva employees has conducted research around campus to determine areas that need to be remodeled and updated.

The main area where renovations are taking place is in the Student Center. About $130,000 has been set aside to provide improvements to this building. The building, which was built in the early 1960s, will have a noticeably updated look when students return in the fall.

The entranceway to the Student Center is being painted, and wooden banisters and railings are being installed. There will be new lights, a new ceiling and a more open feel. Two flat screens will be installed to highlight announcements and events around campus. Nancy Graham, Geneva′s Purchasing Director, has been intricately involved with the planning and implementation of these updates. She notes, “The changes to the entrance of the Student Center will provide modern curb appeal and an appropriate setting for Geneva′s image.”

Skye Lounge is being carpeted and the new furniture will have a more comfortable look and feel. High tables, each surrounded by four chairs, will be placed along the windows in the room, and clusters of comfortable seating will be intermixed with round study tables. Graham says, “We want to make a welcoming environment for students to meet with friends and study. We want more of a living room feel.” Welcoming paintings will be placed around the fireplace to also give the space a more homey feel. The walls will be repainted and a new air conditioning unit has been installed for the front half of the Student Center. Leaky piping below the Brig is being replaced, and a new wheelchair lift is being installed to the second floor. Gone is the turquoise-colored exterior; it is being painted with a tan shade to match the neutral brick.

Chimes and Student Publications are both receiving new, renovated offices in the Student Center. There is also a new Student Development conference room, which will have a projector and white board, located in the back of Skye Lounge.

The Fitness Center is also being updated this summer. A sum of $75,000 is designated for new equipment, painting and flooring. The walls are being painted in Geneva gold, and the floors will be updated, but the majority of the funds set aside for this room will be for new workout equipment. The new equipment will allow students a greater variety in their fitness routine. A mural is also being designed for the stairwell down to the fitness center.

Old Main classrooms continue to be renovated with new lighting, wood flooring, wainscoting, painting, ceiling and projectors. The concrete stairs entering Old Main closest to the Science and Engineering building are being repaired.

The Young and Arms Apartment parking lot is receiving new brighter lighting and Geneva is working with Beaver Falls to get new street lighting in that area as well. All the furnaces in Young East are being replaced with new units. The McKee Residence Hall interior is being completely repainted, and the hallway carpeting is being replaced.

There are also a number of other projects taking place around campus. Areas inside and outside of Fern Cliffe are receiving repairs and new paint, while Downey House is being carpeted and repainted both inside and out. Classrooms in the Rapp Technical Design Center are being repainted, as is the stairwell in McCartney Library that leads to the McCartney room. Reed House is having its front and back porches repaired and the inside walls painted, and new carpet installed. Alumni Hall is having new carpet and hard floors installed, and the inside offices and outside trim repainted.

The roof of Alexander Hall is being replaced as well as the roof above the entrance to the Education department in McKee Hall. The concrete steps connected to the back side of McKee Hall are being renovated as well. The Northwood portico is having repairs made to it, and the brick walls outside of Pearce Hall and Clark Hall have been rebuilt.

The women′s bathroom in Metheny Fieldhouse is being renovated inside, while concrete is being repaired outside the building. The road behind Northwood Hall and the parking lot near the kitchen of Alexander Hall are being repaved, and road curbs and railings are being repainted throughout campus. Various other sidewalk repairs are in progress.

Geneva is blessed to have talented men and women who can work on these projects working for the institution. Because of their wide range of expertise, Geneva has been able to stay within budget even with the large amount of renovations happening around campus. Rick Fleischer, in particular, has worked above and beyond the call of duty on the new woodwork for the entrance to the student Center. His expertise has allowed Geneva to be faithful with the limited resources available.

Right now, you don′t need to look far to see the hammers swinging and the paint brushes flying on College Hill. That′s why Geneva invites members of the community near and far to stop by and see the campus improvements when they′re completed this fall.
