Student Center Grand Opening

Student Center Grand Opening

The chilly weather and threatening rain didn′t stop the Geneva community from showing up for the recent ribbon breaking ceremony at the newly renovated Student Center last week. Of course, the promise of free gifts and cookies may have helped. A crowd of students, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate the results of a lot of hard and dedicated work over the summer. The students followed Student Union President Gwen Ward ′12 through the front doors of the Student Center, up the stairs in the beautiful wood-paneled entranceway and into the redecorated Skye Lounge.

As students and others congregated in front of the building on the morning of Thursday, September 15, catching free gifts such as Geneva t-shirts and sunglasses, Provost Ken Carson welcomed everyone and then opened the ceremony with a prayer. Promising to keep his comments brief “because it′s so cold,” Dr. Carson noted that “the ′60s George Jetson look is gone.” He then mentioned a number of other completed campus improvements, drawing applause for the new conference room, reconstructed Old Main stairs and refurbished Fitness Center.

Executive Vice President Larry Griffith spoke next, reminiscing about the turquoise exterior panels that had adorned the building since it was opened in 1965. The Student Center renovation, he explained, “is about students, about making a difference in their quality of life at Geneva.” He then identified some of the key people involved in the project, including Associate Vice President of Operations and Human Resources Tim Baird, Physical Plant Director Jeff Lydic and Assistant Director of the Physical Plant Paul Pishioneri.

Griffith went on to thank Purchasing Director Nancy Graham for “stretching resources and treating them like her own,” and for all the work she did in planning and design. He also recognized Geneva carpenter Rick Fleischer for the artistry of his work in the entranceway, electricians Ed Waskiewicz and Tom Turney, and all members of Physical Plant.

Dr. Carson retook the stage to invite Ward to break the ribbon and lead students into the building, saying, “May God be praised as you use the Student Center.”

The building′s new appearance certainly made a positive impression on students. "The new Student Center looks amazing!” exclaimed sophomore music business major Jesse Titus. “The upgrades that were made create an atmosphere fit for learning. I can tell they have taken a lot of time on this project and it has definitely paid off."

Junior student ministry major Bethany Kiehl agreed. "I'm really impressed with the remodeling for the Student Center. It's been a great experience watching the campus transform from before the Beyond the Bend project until now.”
