Student Alumni Networking Event

Each semester, Geneva College offers numerous events to provide students the skills they need to pursue their callings following graduation. Last year, Career Development and Alumni Relations joined together to establish an event providing students the opportunity to practice their networking skills. The endeavor proved to be an invaluable experience for students, so last week, current Geneva students and alumni were brought together once again for the second annual Student Alumni Networking Event.

Alumni Relations Representative Melanie Katip had a large role in planning and organizing the event. “Overall the evening far exceeded my expectations, thanks to the alumni, faculty, leadership team and students who participated,” she said. “I believe that students and alumni alike benefited from the panelists and table discussions, and anticipate that many students will receive internship opportunities as a result of this event.”

A panel of alumni representing such fields as communications, business, engineering, biology, human services/psychology and computer science addressed the more than 100 students attending the event. These Geneva graduates shared their experience on effectively networking for jobs and internships, described the types of experience students should pursue, explained how to approach an interview, provided tips on constructing a resume, and offered reflections on the most valuable lessons they took away from their Geneva education and how they have applied their worldviews in their professions.

Along with the panel hosts, 21 additional established Geneva alumni shared how they made the transition from being a college student to a working professional. Students were able to meet with alumni in their respective majors and ask them questions regarding what their day-to-day jobs entail, how they got started in their positions, and more.

“The Career Development staff, led by Rob Rostoni and Beth Ann Mine, provided a valuable program,” said Alumni Director Tom Stein. “A large number of alumni and current students connected in meaningful and profitable ways.”

Senior business major Nick Hamming noted that the event was “very informational and enforced the importance of the resume and job-seeking techniques that Geneva encourages.”

Junior biology major Ethan Joseph also found the evening to be worthwhile. “I thought the Student Alumni Networking Event was a fantastic opportunity to get to know and talk with Geneva grads that were once in my shoes and are now living and working in the field,” he explained. “It was tremendously beneficial to listen and ask them questions about the route they took and what their overall experience has been like working in the same field that I myself hope one day to work in.”

Interviewing for internships and jobs can be a scary task for students, but the Student Alumni Networking Event left those in attendance with tips and advice from alumni, some of whom were in the same position recently, and provided valuable approaches to take for the future.
