Geneva Faculty Excellence

Each year, Geneva College faculty members are nominated by both colleagues and students for the Excellence in Scholarship and Excellence in Teaching Awards. These honors are then presented to two professors during the opening Academic Convocation, recognizing these individuals for their outstanding efforts in scholarly work and classroom instruction.

Math professor Edward Dambach received the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award. He has taught classes at Geneva since 1986. He is a member of the board of directors for the Blackhawk Federal Credit Union and previously taught math at Beaver County′s Blackhawk and Riverside high schools.

According to the people who nominated Professor Dambach for this award, he “brings a remarkable energy and enthusiasm to the classroom that motivates students and engages them in active learning—even in a large classroom setting” and “is without a doubt the most exciting and effective professor I′ve had in my college career.”

Professor Dambach says, “I was overwhelmed when the award was announced at the Academic Convocation. I am truly blessed to be at Geneva and to have the privilege of working with outstanding students and dedicated faculty. Although it is an honor to receive such an award, I thank my students for their dedication and devotion to their mathematics studies and the faculty for their continued support and encouragement.”

This year, the Excellence in Scholarship Award went to Dr. Ralph Ancil, Professor of Economics. In addition to teaching, he has contributed articles to many publications over the years, including the Pennsylvania Economic Review, The Imaginative Conservative and the Intercollegiate Review. He most recently presented at the Pennsylvania Economics Association annual conference at Edinboro University.

“When I came to Geneva, I was quite impressed with how dedicated Ralph is to scholarly pursuits,” says fellow business professor Denise Murphy-Gerber. “Year after year, I have watched Ralph spend his entire summer researching, writing and presenting at conferences. His work has been accepted in a wide variety of industry and professional publications in the area of economics.”

Dr. Ancil says, “My work in both economic policy and theory has been not only an absorbing learning experience, but it has helped to make me a better teacher.”
