March 2011Sally Kelly '98: Human Resources Graduate Geneva College Adult Degree Completion Program graduate Sally Kelly learned that her education was instrumental in preparing her for her job — even when the job wasn't what she initially planned on pursuing. While in the ADCP human resources program, Sally landed a successful internship in work force development at the Kent State University East Liverpool campus. From there a job opportunity opened up as an education outreach coordinator at Kent State, and she is still finding the position enjoyable and fulfilling. As an education outreach coordinator, Sally has reached many low-income adults in her community who are looking for career and education advice. In this federally funded position, Sally helps many people in GED classrooms and low-income housing to search for jobs and education to help provide a better life for them and their families. But her service doesn't stop there. Sally teaches her clients college survival skills and time management tips. She shows them how to apply for grants, scholarships and school loans. She also helped the residents of an apartment building install a child care program and playground. Sally is thankful for the academically strong, practical and Christ-centered Geneva College education that prepared her for this job. “I love Geneva. I loved my time there. They taught me to see Jesus in everyone′s face. That was the most important thing anyone could have taught me.” As for her dreams of working in human resources management? “I'd still love to someday,” she said. But for now, both Sally and her surrounding community are thankful that she′s helping so many people as an outreach coordinator. ADCP has been vital in preparing her for where she is today — and where she could be tomorrow. With a Geneva ADCP education, Sally Kelly is making a difference in the world. |
