Michele Scanlan ′98,
Human Resources

Today's adult faces many challenges. Life is a constant juggling act of the responsibilities of family, work and other commitments. The adult student faces those same challenges, but must also find a way to attend and afford a bachelor's degree. Michele Scanlan was such a student. She had completed her associate degree and was in the process of attending a local university to earn her bachelor's degree. But because of the amount of credits that she needed and her job as a human resources assistant at the Altoona Hospital, the process was slow and an end was not in sight.

After seeing a newspaper advertisement that the Geneva College Adult Degree Programs would be offered in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, she sought more information. “I was attracted to being able to obtain a bachelor of science degree in human resources with the flexibility to work full time while also raising a small family—all at an affordable price. Geneva also accepted my associate degree credits, which helped me complete my bachelor's degree in 18 months,” Michele recalls.

The completion of her degree proved to be worth the effort. “I received my B.S. degree from Geneva and went on to receive a Human Resources Director job at another local hospital within months of graduating from the program, increasing my earning potential as well as continuing my learning continuum.”

And with the momentum that she gained while in the Adult Degree Programs, she entered a master's program in human resources at St. Francis University and also received her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification.

But the secret to success lies not only in managing responsibilities or turning your assignments in on time. Michele discovered that her classmates were valuable to her success. “The professional relationships you develop within this cohort last a lifetime, whether it is mentoring from other students in areas of their expertise or even job opportunities at companies.”

So don't be afraid to add one more responsibility to your schedule—the program lasts 17 months and is offered in more locations and even online to better help you reach your goals. Call the Adult Degree Programs office today to get started!
