Steven M. Rossi, MSOL Cohort 42

SteveRossi_v2.jpgThe purpose of the Geneva College MSOL program is to provide adults the opportunity for continued professional growth and advancement. Development of individual leadership skills, an understanding of effective organizational leadership methods and applicable biblical principles empower students and graduates to bring about transformation in their workplace, community, church, family and self. Our graduates are making a difference in both for-profit and nonprofit sectors.

MSOL graduate Steven Rossi, Cohort 42, says, "God′s hand is evident in my story in the sense that leading a 501(c)(3) nonprofit was not my ambition, but His plan." Steve is the executive director of Aliquippa Impact, a grassroots nonprofit organization that began as a ministry to youth and their families in downtown Aliquippa through Crestmont Alliance Church. The youth development organization′s mission is to foster tangible hope to youth in toxic environments by building relational bridges and developmental assets.

The first Aliquippa Impact summer camp was established in 2005 by college student Joel Repic and a handful of fellow students, trusted mentors and donors. The summer camp reached 50 at-risk youth living in and around Linmar Terrace, an Aliquippa neighborhood fraught with crime as well as environmental and social neglect. Provision of summer programming helped to develop a neighborhood presence in a "grassroots" fashion. Summer camps continued to thrive over the next three years as youth and families served by the program realized its outreach was genuine.

In 2007, through a partnership with Family Guidance in Sewickley, PA, a year-round mentorship program was added. In 2008 an additional summer camp curriculum was offered in Aliquippa′s Plan 12 neighborhood, located about two miles away from Linmar Terrace. This camp increased the number of children served by the program to 100. In 2009 two camps were offered which served over 200 youth. It was at this time that Steve began working with Aliquippa Impact as Operations Manager. The organization continued to grow both operationally and programmatically.

In 2010, founder Joel Repic became Director of Program Development and Steve became Executive Director. "A Future Anticipated" (AFA) commenced as a summer initiative. In 2011, AFA officially became a year-round program. Partnerships continue to develop with for-profit and nonprofit organizations and grant makers. An administrative assistant, director of donor relations and web manager have been added. There are three AFA cohorts running at this time, and Mentoring and City Camp continue to be an integral part of Aliquippa Impact.

Steve tells us, "I am passionate about the living Christ, and His Kingdom breaking in on Aliquippa. God has called me to the city to make disciples and to be conformed into His likeness in the process. I′m excited about 'participating in the divine nature' (2 Peter 1:4) out of my relationship with Him on a daily basis in the context of our community of faith and family, Aliquippa Impact and our beloved city."

Steve says, "MSOL was a tool that empowered me to be a serving leader. This, too, is something I′m certainly still growing into-and always will be. God equipped me in part via MSOL teachers and readings related to serving, intrinsic motivation, change, strategy, communication and ethics."

Steve graduated from the MSOL program in 2005. He and his wife Julie (Reed) are both 2002 graduates of Geneva College. They have three children: Ava, Reed and Roman.
