A Message from Nancy Smith, ACCESS Director
As a Christian college of the arts, sciences and professional studies, Geneva offers a rigorous academic program. This academic excellence is evidenced by outcomes in all fields. For example, engineering graduates have had a 100% job placement rate over the last ten years and there is a 99% first-time pass rate for teacher certification by elementary education graduates. In addition to their field of study, students are required to complete courses in the core curriculum. As a result, students will likely be taking courses in subjects that are unfamiliar to them.
It's no wonder, then, that many students face "that class" during their college career, the course in which, regardless of their efforts, they continue to struggle. Geneva provides the services of the Academic Counseling Center and Educational Support Services (ACCESS) for every student at Geneva. The mission of the ACCESS Office is two-fold: (1) to provide academic support and (2) to provide advocacy for the diverse students who attend Geneva College. The ACCESS Office promotes academic success for students struggling with a particular academic subject as well as students with disabilities. The following services are provided for students in the ACCESS Office.
Students can apply for a peer tutor in almost any subject and receive one hour of free tutoring per week per course. Each semester the ACCESS office has nearly 100 students tutoring other students. Tutors have completed the courses for which they are tutoring, have been recommended by the professor, and have attended tutor training sessions. The feedback received from the tutees about peer tutors has been consistently positive.
Opportunities for improving study skills:
Four study skills workshops are offered each semester in order to help students develop their study skills. Topics addressed in these workshops include time management, stress management, nutrition, and power learning, topics applicable to every college student.
Students also have the opportunity to evaluate their study strengths and weaknesses through a learning and study skills inventory. A member of the ACCESS office staff will review the findings of the inventory with the students to help them make positive decisions about how to maximize their strengths and adapt to their weaker skill areas.
About 100 students with documented disabilities attend Geneva College. Professional documentation is received, reviewed and kept in confidential files in the ACCESS Office. This documentation provides the basis for approving reasonable academic accommodations which are tailored to student′s specific needs. These accommodations and/or modifications provide the opportunity for all students to perform up to their potential without unnecessary barriers.
The ACCESS Office staff is available to every student at Geneva College.
