Chapel at Geneva College in Metheny Fieldhouse

From summer preview week for incoming freshmen to the commencement ceremony, the integration of faith and learning is weaved through the entire Geneva College experience. The Geneva community gathers weekly for chapel to praise God, engage in Christian fellowship and grow in "knowledge and depth of insight" (Philippians 1:9). Members from the Geneva community as well as nationally-acclaimed speakers challenge and encourage Geneva students, faculty and staff alike as we grow together in our relationship with God.

As part of Martin Luther King, Jr. Week activities, on January 19, Laura Carpenter, Director of Diversity at Madison Square Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan challenged the Geneva community to have a dream. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that he shared in his famous speech in 1963. Jesus also has a dream for us. He shares this dream in John 17:20-23. "My prayer is… that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me… so that they may be brought to complete unity."

Laura challenged the Geneva community to have a dream and live out the calling of building a diverse community of believers. God′s Word says that we are ambassadors and reconcilers, being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12 emphasizes the importance of a diverse community, being many members, but one body.

Laura highlighted how our Reformed theology resonates with the dream that through His power, God has called us to build a diverse community of believers. We are totally depraved sinners, not saints, saved by grace. We are unconditionally elected and are overflowing with unconditional love. Trusting in God′s limitless love, we are fully atoned by God′s limited atonement and we are in communion with him only because of his irresistible grace. Finally, we cannot stop because our God, who perseveres with us, gives us the grace to persevere!

Laura Carpenter and others continue to follow the 2010-2011 chapel theme, "You Gotta Serve Somebody," based on the book Counterfeit Gods by Tim Keller. Chapel Coordinator Dean Smith "hopes that throughout the course of the year, these various speakers will help us identify our idols so that we can confess them and have Jesus replace them." Through the dedication of the faculty and staff to the Christian faith and the truths being taught in chapel, students at Geneva College are growing in both biblical knowledge and in their personal faith.

Laura Carpenter′s message, as well as past chapel messages, is available for you to listen to on our website.
