Message from parents of a Geneva alumnus - Owen and Shirley Landes

Kerri (Landis) Clauser and her family.
Owen and Shirley Landes with Kerri (Landes '08) and Casey Clauser

Whether you are the parents of a son or a daughter (in our case a daughter), you have raised your child for 17 or 18 years to find, suddenly, it is time to turn them loose into the world of post-secondary education. They are so young, and you wonder, "What will they experience?" You have tried to teach them right from wrong, and to have a strong personal relationship with God. You want your child to be successful academically, and to truly enjoy their college years. At Geneva, we found that academics are stressed as well as a true relationship with God.

Our daughter, Kerri (Landes) Clauser, graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in political science and a B.S. in human services. While at Geneva, she was a resident assistant, president of Geneva′s chapter of the International Justice Mission and an officer in the Acting on AIDS club. She was also central in organizing a successful social justice-focused, week-long program on campus, and spent two spring breaks helping with hurricane relief projects in New Orleans.

As parents, we found Geneva to be extremely dedicated to developing her academically as well as spiritually. We felt like we were sending our daughter off to an extended family. The Geneva professors were very caring and nurturing to their students. Many professors invited Kerri and other students to lunch, a picnic or dinner in their homes where lasting relationships were formed. Kerri was encouraged to use her talents at home as well as off the campus on mission trips.

Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, she immediately entered the University of Pittsburgh for graduate work, pursuing a master's degree. Geneva's academic preparation paid off. Within a short period of time, she learned that her undergraduate studies had prepared her far and above most of her classmates.

Kerri′s relationship with the Geneva community continues. She keeps in touch with her professors, and Geneva′s Center for Faith and Practice coordinated a Quest trip to Pittsburgh to visit Kerri for the purpose of learning about the Christian community where she and her husband live and minister. In addition to serving as a home missionary with Dr. John Wallace′s Bible Center Church in Homewood, she is a medical social worker at Magee Women's Hospital UPMC in Pittsburgh.

Our relationship with Geneva continues as well. We use every opportunity to tell families with college-bound students about Geneva College and Kerri′s experience. We are thankful to Geneva for giving our daughter a well-rounded academic program, a family atmosphere, four years of memories and friends she will NEVER forget, and keeping Christ at the center of it all...Priceless!

Owen is a chemistry teacher at Elizabethtown Area High School, Elizabethtown, PA, and also teaches in the summer at Milton Hershey School in the AEE Program, Hershey, PA. Owen and Shirley volunteer with On Fire Youth Ministries, Myerstown, Pa. (A ministry for troubled teens).
