A message from Dave Layton, AVP of Enrollment, and Brian Jensen, Dean of Student Development

As the relaxing days of summer wind down, anticipation for the first day of the fall semester is building. While everyone in the Geneva community is looking forward to the beginning another academic year, few are as excited (or as anxious) as your sons and daughters, who are starting their college careers and entering a brand new phase of their lives!

Sharing a room often tops the list of concerns for first-year students who will be living on campus. Roommates should find ways to connect and get to know one another before arriving on campus. Although many of them will connect with their roommates on Facebook, an online profile won't provide a complete picture. Encourage your son or daughter to dig deeper by talking with his or her roommate, searching for common interests and communicating about what items each will bring for the room.

Another way students can prepare for the start of college is to connect with a local church before arriving. A church family is a valuable source of spiritual and emotional support for students as they transition into college life. Visit www.geneva.edu/pastors-churches/churches/local_churches, where you can search by denomination or church name and find information about service times, transportation, links to websites, directions and more. Then, ask your student to check out the church′s website to find out if it could be a match.

Also, Geneva's Pisgah Program offers Freshman Expedition—an outdoor orientation experience—from August 15-19. Although this is not a required part of orientation, Freshman Expedition is designed to help incoming students jumpstart their college experience, establish healthy goals and grow in their relationship with the Lord. Go to www.geneva.edu/object/freshman_expedition for trip details and to register before the July 31 deadline.

Welcome Week is an exciting week of activities beginning Wednesday, August 20. First-year students will be receiving Learning and Transition course credit for many of the activities, so Welcome Week is mandatory for all incoming students. Find the schedule of activities and more at /student-programs/first_year_experience.

The residence halls will open for all new students on the first day of Welcome Week, Wednesday, August 20, at 10 a.m.; however, students involved in certain activities may come early for camps. The leaders of these groups will provide specific information and move-in dates.

And please remind your student to visit www.geneva.edu/about-geneva/campus_bookstore in early August to order books.

Once the semester begins on Monday, August 25, campus clubs provide another effective way for students to plug into the Geneva community while meeting others who share similar interests. Students can visit www.geneva.edu/student-life/opportunities/clubs now to see the list of clubs offered at Geneva, and should plan on attending the Cokes and Connections event on Friday, September 5 to learn how to get involved with these organizations.

We are so pleased that God has led your son or daughter to pursue an affordable, quality, Christ-centered education at Geneva College. We pray that the Lord will guide us in supporting your student in making this important transition and preparing all our students to serve Him in all they do.
