Assistive technology enables students with disabilities to use information technology resources productively. Tasks such as listening to a textbook, enlarging a syllabus, or reading an assignment can be easily accomplished through the use of assistive technology. The use of this technology can diminish or even eliminate barriers to learning, enabling students with disabilities to reach their full potential.

Several technologies we currently offer eligible Geneva students include:

Dragon Naturally Speaking Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 allows the approved user to create documents, reports, emails, and search the web, just by speaking. It is up to 3 times faster than typing and 99% accurate. Dragon is Microsoft compatible and is available in the Learning Center.

Text Aloud 3.0 Text Aloud 3.0 is the ultimate tool to help you hear your text read as well as proofread your writing. TextAloud reads text from email, web pages, reports and more, aloud on your PC. TextAloud can also save your daily reading to MP3 or Windows Media files ready for playback on your preferred computer or iPod.

Read & Write Gold Read & Write Gold has the potential to improve learning for students with reading and writing disabilities. The tools in this program help struggling readers and writers to become more independent in the classroom. The program features text reading, voice dictation, research aids, and teaching tools. It reads electronic text and helps writers with predictive spelling, word choice, dictionary and thesaurus features.

Livecribe Smartpen Livescribe Smartpens record everything you write and hear so you′ll never miss a word during class. The Smartpen is a ballpoint pen with an embedded computer and digital audio recorder. When used with the Anoto digital paper, it records what it writes for later, and through uploading to a computer it will synchronize with the recording. This allows students to replay the lecture that pertains specifically to the notes they are studying.

ZoomText ZoomText magnifier enlarges and enhances everything on your computer screen, making all computer applications easy to see and use. This is designed as an easy-to-use software program for students with visual impairments.

Tape Recorders Tape recorders are beneficial in recording lectures in class for easy play-back while studying in a variety of locations.

BOOKS.GOOGLE.COM You should go to and do a search for a old books that would likely be out of copyright. The engine should allow you to view the full-text of the book online. Many public domain and other copyrighted books are free.

  • Public Domain Books: These books are in the public domain in the United States and everybody - including Project Gutenberg and you - may read and distribute them.
  • Copyrighted Books: Some authors give Project Gutenberg permission to distribute their book(s). This permission does not automatically expand to include you. If you want to distribute a copyrighted ebook you found on PG, you have to contact the author and stipulate an agreement. is a web-based system supplying accessible books in digital formats designed for people with disabilities. These digital formats are the NISO/DAISY XML-based format for the next generation of talking books, and the BRF format for Braille devices and printers. Access to copyrighted books from is limited to people in the United States with bona fide print disabilities and the schools and nonprofit organizations serving them. An array of security protections and Digital Rights Management solutions ensure that these books are available only to authorized users.

BROWSEALOUD.COM For students needing to have websites read to you go to: Browsealoud is a computer program that reads out the words on a website. As you move the cursor over words, they are spoken aloud and this program is free for anyone to use. Websites have to pay a yearly charge to be Browsealoud-friendly. This program is quite restrictive since it is based in England and most websites that have installed this feature are located in the United Kingdom so there are not many US websites using Browsealoud but certainly will be adding more US access in the future. Check it out. Search Engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo do have this feature available.

CHRISTIAN CLASSICS ETHEREAL LIBRARY The mission of the CCEL is to build up the church by making classic Christian writings available and promoting their use. You may want to register ($35), but you can also view many wonderful Christian classics in print online or plain text without registering.
