How to Become a Peer Tutor

Faculty members identify prospective tutors each semester. Students who wish to become peer tutors should obtain a faculty recommendation for the course(s) for which they would like to tutor. The form can be found here or in the ACCESS Office.

Qualified tutors will:

  • Attend tutor training every semester
  • Review course content and teach skills such as note taking and test taking
  • Communicate with the student′s professor to determine suitable strategies, building on strengths
  • Identify specific problems that are hindering the student′s progress in his/her course work
  • Support and encourage students with honest and appropriate feedback
  • Interact skillfully, creating a positive learning environment
  • Have some knowledge about different approaches to learning
  • Attend all scheduled tutoring sessions

Tutoring will be most effective when both partners fulfill their responsibilities. If you have concerns about your partnering relationship, speak with the Tutor Coordinator in the ACCESS Office. You will be notified by campus mail as soon as a tutee is assigned to you. Tutors are expected to contact new tutees within two days of the assignment.
