Spring is starting to heat up. Maybe not on the thermometer, but Geneva's baseball and softball teams both had sizzling hot weeks of action. The baseball team won four out of five and the softball team finished the week with a perfect 4-0 record. Geneva's track and field team opened its season on Saturday at the Western Pennsylvania Championships.

On Saturday, Geneva's track team went up against some of the best competition in the region at the Western PA Championships at Carnegie Mellon University. Geneva's women stole the show with senior Susan Fletcher bringing home the silver in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Teammate Rebecca VanRegenmorter placed 6th in the 5000 meter event. In the field events, Tiffany Bear placed 12th in both the shot put and the discus. In men's action, Luke Duriancik finished with a top ten in the 400 meter hurdles, while Dan Dillman picked up a pair of top 15's in the shot put and discus.

Geneva's baseball team finished the week with a sizzle. After dropping a game to Penn State Beaver on Monday, the Golden Tornadoes swept doubleheaders against Bethany and the rematch with PS Beaver. Derek Sumner and Dave Foss were masterful in victories over Bethany. Sumner threw a complete game seven-hitter while striking out ten in the game. Justin Montgomery finished off an historic week by picking up his fourth save of the season on Saturday. Montgomery now has 17 saves in his career, which broke the long-standing career record in that category. He appeared in three games this week and allowed just two earned runs. Tadd Eyster picked up at least one hit in each of the five games this week and continues to lead Geneva with his .473 batting average. Freshman Jon Jurinko launched his first two collegiate home runs this week to help pace the offense. Geneva ended the week with an 11-4 overall record, including two wins in the only PAC action of the year.

Geneva's softball team certainly found its offense this week. The Golden Tornadoes posted 56 runs in their four games this week in doubleheader sweeps over Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State Beaver. Geneva moved its overall record to 8-6, including victories in seven of the last eight games. The offense had several stars this past week. Most notably, Michawn Rich posted a .538 average with a pair of homers, Amy Pearce hit .583 with 10 RBI's and Adriane Blake hit .615 with 10 RBI's. As potent as the offense was this week, it was the pitching of Ashley Archer that stole the show. Archer was 3-0 this week in 16.2 innings of work. She struck out 23 batters and walked just three in four outings.
