In only the second indoor track and field meet of the season, the Golden Tornadoes celebrated some major accomplishments at Robert Morris over the weekend. While there was also much celebrating on the Geneva campus on Saturday none of it was as a result of the basketball doubleheader against Grove City College.

Geneva's past met its future on Saturday as over 50 prospective student-athletes spent the day visiting the campus and meeting with current players and coaches. At the same time, over 30 former women's basketball players returned for the basketball alumni game and dinner. While it was clearly a time to celebrate the future and the past, the current basketball teams were in no mood to celebrate.

In women's action, the Golden Tornadoes saw Grove City out score them 37-20 in the second half on its way to a 57-43 final score. That loss came on the heels of a 67-65 victory over Westminster on Wednesday night. Despite watching a 20-point second half lead disappear, the Golden Tornadoes managed to hang on for the two point victory thanks in part to Michawn Rich's 17 points and nine rebounds. Beth DeLuca hit a pair of clutch free throws in the final minute and finished the game with 14 points. Geneva's women finished the week with an overall record of 8-8.

In men's action, Geneva College continues to compete with every team in the conference but have been unable to close the deal. This past week, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a pair of decisions to its biggest rivals. On Wednesday, Geneva College rallied back from 24 points down to close the game to just one with two minutes remaining in the game. Dave Phillips scored a team best 25 points, but it was not enough in an 82-77 loss to Westminster. On Saturday, Phillips again led the offense with 18 points but the veteran presence of Grove City proved to be too much to overcome in a 77-66 loss to the Wolverines. Geneva College ended its week with an overall record of 4-13.

The athletic highlights of the week clearly came out of the Robert Morris University Indoor Invitational on Friday. A trio of male athletes qualified for the NCCAA national meet, while two females also turned in very impressive performances.

The men were led in the shot put by a qualifying throw of 40-11.5 by Dan Dillman, which was good enough for a spot in the nationals. Teammate Corey Fraction also qualified for nationals in the 55 meter race with a fourth place overall time of 6.82. The gold medal on the men's team went to Stephen Polite for his first place finish in the long jump with a distance of 19-11. Jumping for only the second time in his life, Polite was competing in a track meet for the very first time in his career. Polite also jumped far enough to qualify for nationals.

The shining moment for the women's team came in the one-mile run where teammates Rebecca VanRegenmorter and Sarah Davis finished first and third respectively. While Davis posted a time of 5:57.8, VanRegenmorter was busy winning the event with a mark of 5:40.7.
