Geneva's pitching aces in baseball and softball did not disappoint last week with outstanding efforts to help the Golden Tornadoes pick up conference victories. Meanwhile, the track and field team traveled to Mt. Union on Friday and in one case proved that footwear can be optional.

Genevaâ??s softball team opened the week with a pair of disappointing losses at Saint Vincent despite a pair of top notch pitching performances from Julie DiLonardo. The Bearcats defeated Geneva 1-0 in eight innings in game one then rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal a 2-1 victory in the night cap. DiLonardo did herself one better on Thursday as she allowed just one run in a doubleheader sweep over Grove City. Geneva took game one 3-1 on the strength of a two-run homer from Brittany Clark. In game two, Christina Fuquaâ??s RBI single stood up in a 1-0 victory. Geneva ended the week with an overall record of 16-12 including a 4-2 mark in the conference which is good enough for third place in the PAC standings.

Westminster came into Saturdayâ??s doubleheader with a perfect record in conference play. The Titans defeated Geneva 16-9 on Thursday and continued their onslaught with a 15-5 victory in game one on Saturday. Enter Geneva pitching ace Mike Jeffreys. Jeffreys more than cooled off Westminster with a 2-0 complete game shut-out. The Titans had scored 52 runs in their previous three games and were held to just three hits from Jeffreys. Noah Medich picked up a pair of RBIâ??s in the game one loss but came up with an even bigger RBI for Genevaâ??s first run in the night cap. TJ Lambert also knocked in a run giving Geneva all the offense it would need behind Jeffreys. Jon Bushmire also had a solid week with a pair of hits in a loss to W & J on Wednesday before posting a 4-5 day on Thursday at Westminster. Geneva begins a new week with an overall record of 12-15 including a 6-9 mark in conference action.

When it comes to athletic footwear, student-athletes can be pretty particular. Especially in track and field, the shoes that you wear can be your competitive life-blood. On Friday, however, one of Genevaâ??s distance runners proved that footwear isnâ??t really a necessity at all. Emily Hoobler, competing in the 1500 meter race at Mt. Union on Friday, had one of her shoes stepped on and ultimately knocked off early in the race. After running with just one shoe for a while, she realized her stride was not what it should be so she intentionally kicked the other shoe to the side. Running barefoot for the majority of the race, Hoobler posted a time of 19:08, which was just six seconds off of her personal best.

Liz Michalak decided to wear both shoes throughout her busy day as she posted three top five performances in the high jump, long jump and javelin. Katherine Michalak took home first place in the shot put with teammates Kathryn Regalado and Sara Williams also finishing in the top ten in the shot. Shannon Rech won the 3000 meter steeplechase in another highlight on the womenâ??s side. In menâ??s action, Nick Edinger won yet another 5000 meter race while Nick Agostinelli finished fourth in the 100 meter event. Agostinelli teamed up with Aaron Marga, Stephen Polite and Josh Guiser to finish third in the menâ??s 4 x 100 relay, all of which decided to run the race with two shoes securely on their feet.
