While the month of September went out with a flurry of victories, October has opened at a bit of a slower pace. The team that continues to post victories is the womenâ??s tennis team. With three victories this past week, Mandee Craft has her team riding a five game winning streak. Both soccer teams cooled down this week as did the volleyball team. Cross Country made another strong showing at Pitt-Greensburg, while the football team ran into the seventh ranked team in the country and came away with its first loss of the season.

Genevaâ??s football team put its seven game winning streak and perfect 3-0 record on the line on Saturday. Both streaks came to an abrupt end when an early game surge turned sour in a 31-10 loss to Washington & Jefferson. The Golden Tornadoes took a 10-7 lead into the second quarter but watched the Presidentâ??s score the gameâ??s final 24 points. Nick DiPietro connected on a 48 yard field goal and David Girardi scampered for a 14-yard touchdown run for the only Geneva points of the day. Rich Kolesar made his third interception of the season as the defense once again came up with a pair of turnovers. Geneva will put its 3-1 record on the line against Grove City on homecoming Saturday.

Genevaâ??s volleyball team enjoyed mixed results this past week. After sweeping two matches on Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes split a pair of PAC contests at Waynesburg on Saturday. Geneva defeated Carnegie Mellon in an epic five-game match before sweeping Chatham 3-0 on Wednesday. After cruising past Waynesburg 3-0 on Saturday, Geneva fell to Saint Vincent 3-1. Kristland McCracken posted double digit kill numbers in victories over Chatham and Waynesburg, while Adriane Blake threw down a season high 25 kills in the win against Carnegie Mellon. Geneva begins the new week with an overall record of 11-4 as it anticipates four road matches in the next six days.

In cross country action, Genevaâ??s women performed very well in picking up a second place finish in the Bobcat Invitational at Pitt-Greensburg. Shannon Rech was one of four Geneva women to finish in the top 25. Rech was ninth overall with a time of 25:58 while teammates Samantha Miller and Emily Hoobler crossed the line 13th and 14th respectively. Sarah Davis rounded out Genevaâ??s top efforts with a 21st place finish. In menâ??s action. Nick Edinger turned in a top ten performance with a ninth place finish in a time of 29:20. Crossing the line two spots later was Ryan Thorn in 11th position. Genevaâ??s men posted a fourth place finish at Pitt-Greensburg.

The menâ??s soccer team certainly didnâ??t have its easiest week of the season when you looked at the competition. Starting with a 3-0 loss to the top ranked team in the country in Messiah, the Golden Tornadoes then dropped a 3-0 decision to a Thomas More team that has lost just once all season. In both cases, Geneva watched a 1-0 halftime deficit turn into a 3-0 loss. Geneva currently has a 6-4 overall record and has been shut-out in each of its four losses. The good news is when Geneva does get a goal, it has a perfect 6-0 record. The Golden Tornadoes return home this week for a pair of PAC matches.

The womenâ??s soccer team continues to mirror the menâ??s program. With only one match this week, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 2-0 decision to Thomas More in the PAC season opener. Allowing a goal in each half on Friday, Geneva was unable to find the net for the first time all season. Geneva will take its 6-3 overall record into a pair of home conference match-ups this week.

It was a perfect 3-0 week for Geneva womenâ??s tennis as the Golden Tornadoes improved to 7-4 on the season with victories over W & J, Bethany and Chatham. Kara Zimmerman and Maura McLaughlin each posted perfect 6-0 records with three wins each in singles and doubles play. Overall, Geneva outscored its opponents this week by the count of 21-4. The Golden Tornadoes will look to continue their role with two more PAC matches coming up this week.
