The spring season began in the sunshine state last week and both the baseball and softball teams brought the sun back with them to Beaver Falls. Each team had to deal with some inclement weather on the trip, but both managed to get the season underway. Genevaâ??s baseball team came back home with a 3-3 overall record that included three come-from-behind victories. Phill Shallenberger won a pair of games on the mound with Mike Trn picking up the other victory. The Golden Tornadoes plated over 50 runs in their six games as they opened the season on a good foot. The highlight of the trip came on opening day with a doubleheader sweep over Martin Luther College. In the process, head coach Alan Sumner became the first Geneva coach in any sport to claim 500 victories.

Offense came much more difficult for the Geneva softball team. After an impressive opening day with a pair of victories and 18 runs scored, the Golden Tornadoes managed only one more victory in the final eight games to return home with a 3-7 mark. Four of the seven losses were of the shut-out variety, including a pair of 1-0 losses to end the trip on Monday. Julie DiLonardo claimed the #1 pitching spot with all three Geneva victories and an ERA that is under 1.50. Offensively, Leanne Abate opened the year with six straight hits and came home with a batting average close to .500.

The Geneva menâ??s basketball team will be heading to Oakland City, In. this week to begin play at the NCCAA national tournament beginning on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Mid-Continent University.
