Our new academic year begins on Monday and the athletic season is not far behind. In fact, the Golden Tornadoes will get rolling on Tuesday with the start of the cross country, menâ??s soccer and womenâ??s tennis seasons. The womenâ??s soccer team kicks off on Wednesday with volleyball and football beginning next weekend. The promise of a new season is enough to get the juices flowing for each of our athletic teams.

The womenâ??s tennis team returns six players from last year as ninth year head coach Mandee Craft is ready for another challenging season. Our volleyball team is coming off its first 20-win season in five years at 22-11, including a 13-5 mark against all PAC competition. Coaches Smith and Conser have a record 16 student-athletes on their opening day roster. Linda Sumner returns for her third season after capturing NCCAA East region coach of the year honors in 2008. Sumner orchestrated one of the finest turnarounds in school history with an 8-5-5 overall mark last year.

Cross country begins a new era with Brian Yowler taking over the reins after an 11-year stint by Bret Otte. More record numbers on the cross country roster with a total of 30 student-athletes combined on both the menâ??s and womenâ??s teams. Menâ??s soccer will try to build off of its second consecutive 12 win season under fourth year head coach Todd Beall. After back to back losses in the NCCAA eastern regional semi-finals, Beall and the Golden Tornadoes have their sights set on an NCCAA national tournament berth.

Last but not least is the upcoming campaign for the Geneva College football team. Geno DeMarco begins his 17 th season at the helm matching Gene Sullivan for the longest coaching tenure in the 120 years of Geneva football. The Golden Tornadoes hope their late season momentum and four-game winning streak will carry over into 2009 with many of their key contributors back for another season. Geneva opens the season on Saturday against Frostburg State as we open our new doors for â??Experience Geneva Nightâ??. There will be no admission charged for the season opener.
