Week number two of the fall athletic season was once again successful for the Golden Tornadoes. Highlighted by another victory for the Geneva football team, week two featured a very impressive showing for the cross country team, a perfect week for volleyball and a dramatic overtime win in womenâ??s soccer.

A full slate of action on Wednesday included history being made on the volleyball court. On its way to an easy 3-0 victory against Grove City, Genevaâ??s volleyball team watched history be made by junior Adriane Blake. Throwing down a team best 16 kills in the win, Blake became only the fourth player in school history to record 1000 career kills. Rachel Kuegler chipped in with ten kills and Laura Zerbe added nine in Genevaâ??s straight set win over Grove City in the only action of the week. The Golden Tornadoes have won three straight and moved to 4-1 on the young season.

More drama took place on Wednesday night as the womenâ??s soccer team picked up a 1-0 overtime victory against LaRoche. Risa Tillman scored her first collegiate goal with three minutes remaining in the first overtime to give Geneva its second win of the season. Lauren Londino made eight saves in picking up her first shut-out of the year. On Saturday, Maura Allen scored a pair of goals to erase a 2-0 first half deficit. The comeback fell short as Medaille posted a pair of second half goals in a 4-2 final. The womenâ??s soccer team ended the week with a 2-2 overall record.

The menâ??s soccer team out played Heidelberg on the field on Wednesday but not on the scoreboard. Despite several outstanding scoring chances, Geneva could not find the net in a 1-0 loss to Heidelberg. The Golden Tornadoes dropped to 2-2 on the season after their only action of the week. Geneva has dropped both road matches this season, but has balanced that with a pair of victories at Merriman Athletic Complex.

It was a busy week for the womenâ??s tennis team as it traveled to the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes opened the week with a 6-3 loss at Saint Vincent on Wednesday. Despite a pair of victories in doubles play, Geneva was unable to upset a very solid Bearcats team. On Saturday, Geneva won one of three matches to finish fourth at the Behrend Tournament. Kara Zimmerman and Maura McLaughlin each won singles matches against Bethany and Frostburg State on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes opened the day with a 5-0 loss to Behrend, but turned the tables against PAC foe Bethany with a 5-0 victory of its own. The day ended with a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Frostburg State in the third place match. Geneva is 2-3 on the season and will host a pair of PAC opponents this week.

The cross country teams continue to improve with each week and on Saturday the Golden Tornadoes enjoyed their best results of the year. Both the menâ??s and womenâ??s teams brought home second place overall finishes at the Waynesburg Invitational. With a field of eight schools for each race, it was an exciting day for Geneva cross country. Led once again by a solid group of freshman, Genevaâ??s women posted 72 points and the men scored 84 points to take second place in both races. Shannon Reich led the women with a ninth place finish and a time of 25:35 with teammate and fellow freshman Samantha Miller finishing 14th overall. Nick Edinger finished 20th with teammate Ryan Thorn crossing the line only 3/100 of a second behind him for 21 position. The cross country teams will enjoy a weekend off before heading to Saint Vincent College on September 26.

For the first time since the 2005 season, the Geneva football team has started the season with a record of 2-0. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes managed to put a slow start behind them and cruise past Saint Vincent 32-17. Geneva trailed 14-0 in the first quarter before scoring 32 of the gameâ??s final 35 points. Brian Wilson pulled in a pair of 11-yard touchdowns from David Girardi and Gerard Muschette rushed for over 150 yards in pacing the offense. Genevaâ??s defense came up with three turnovers in the victory including Rich Kolesarâ??s second interception of the season. Adam Rose led the defensive charge with ten tackles as the Golden Tornadoes defeated Saint Vincent in the first of two meetings between the schools this year. Geneva will enjoy its only bye week of the season coming up on Saturday before getting back to work on September 26 when it hosts Thiel College in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
