It was the weekend Genevaâ??s volleyball team has been gearing up for all season. Already enjoying a memorable season, the Golden Tornadoes headed to Rochester, NY for the NCCAA East regional tournament at Roberts Wesleyan College. Making history in the first match of tournament, the Golden Tornadoes were unable to maintain their momentum throughout the weekend. More history was made on the cross country course at Oberlin on Saturday as Genevaâ??s women provided two of the top seven performances in school history while the menâ??s team also provided one of the fastest times in Geneva history. It was a reversal of roles at Grove City for the football team as the defense played its best game of the year but the offense was unable to generate much in a loss to the Wolverines. The womenâ??s tennis team finished its season on a winning note with three seniors bidding farewell to the program. In soccer, Genevaâ??s women continue to look for offense while the menâ??s team got just enough to sneak by on Saturday afternoon.

Genevaâ??s volleyball team beat Roberts Wesleyan in the first match of the NCCAA east regional tournament. In doing so, the Golden Tornadoes improved to 20-2 which matched the best start in school history. Geneva finished the weekend with a record of 2-2 and an overall mark of 21-4. With a third place finish at the east regional tournament, the Golden Tornadoes must now wait for a possible at-large bid to the NCCAA national tournament later this fall. Adriane Blake was outstanding in Genevaâ??s loss to top seeded Mt. Vernon on Saturday. Blake threw down 20 kills and committed just three hitting errors in the match. Meanwhile, Rachel Kuegler and Maggie Bowersox each provided great support at the net in helping the Golden Tornadoes get past Roberts Wesleyan and Nyack at the regional tournament.

In one of the largest Division III cross country meets in the country, Geneva went up against some of the best competition in the region on Saturday. The womenâ??s team featured personal best performances from Julia Urbanski and Alayna Merkle. Urbanski ran the fourth fastest 6K race in school history at 23:47 while Merkle ran the seventh fastest time. Urbanskiâ??s sub 24-minute pace was the first of its kind since 2008 and was 1:23 better than her personal best. Genevaâ??s 1-5 runners ran the fastest average time since the 2007 PAC championships. In menâ??s action, Nick Edingerâ??s personal best time of 26:40 was the seventh fastest in school history and he was not alone. Nine of Genevaâ??s 14 runners ran personal best times on the day. Ryan Thorn became the most recent member of Genevaâ??s sub-28 club with a time of 27:24 and Jon Shope set a new freshman record with a time of 27:26.

One week after lighting up the scoreboard in a 55-42 loss to Waynesburg, Genevaâ??s offense could not generate much in a 13-7 loss at Grove City. Gerard Muschetteâ??s one yard run in the first quarter put Geneva ahead but turned out to be its only points of the game in a defensive struggle. The touchdown was Muschetteâ??s 40th career score and left him just one shy of Melvin Cobbsâ?? all-time record for touchdowns. Genevaâ??s defense stepped up big time in shutting down Grove City time and time again in the second half but the offense could not take advantage. Jon Baldwin and Tucker Nuetzel led the way with ten tackles each as the Golden Tornadoes fell to 3-4 on the season.

In the final tennis match of the season, Geneva cruised past Washington & Jefferson by the count of 7-2. Seniors Chelsea Cover, Kate Caldwell and Maura McLaughlin each finished their respective careers with victories in their final matches. Geneva finished the season with an overall record of 8-5 which was the third consecutive winning season for the Golden Tornadoes.

The womenâ??s soccer team has fallen on some tough times in recent matches. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 9-4-4 with a pair of 1-0 shut-out losses to Bethany and Washington & Jefferson. Geneva has dropped three straight and four of five since a perfect 8-0-3 record in the month of September. Geneva will look to right the ship this week with two more PAC matches against Westminster and Chatham University.

Genevaâ??s men have gotten right back up after a loss to Grove City a week ago ended an eight-game winning streak. The Golden Tornadoes defeated Bethany 7-1 on Wednesday and then snuck past W & J on the road by the count of 1-0 on Saturday. A pair of corner kick goals put Geneva ahead 2-1 at Bethany before exploding for seven goals in the match. Kenton Burckhart got assists on both corner goals from David Harwood and Jake McCracken. A pair of goals by Austin Petrie highlighted the offensive explosion. On Saturday, Caleb Musselmanâ??s first half goal was all Geneva would need in moving to 12-2-1 on the season as sophomore Evan Biedenbach registered his second shut-out of the season.
