The 2011 spring athletic season opened last week in the Sunshine State. The Geneva baseball team got off to a very impressive start while the softball team held its own against some of the best competition in the country.

After dropping the first game of the new season, Geneva reeled off eight consecutive victories and sits at 8-1 on the young season. The offense has opened the season in mid-season form scoring in double figures in seven of its eight victories. With a team batting average well above the .340 mark in the first week of the season, senior Jon Jurinko has led the way with a batting average of close to .500 in his first 30 at-bats. Jurinko posted 14 hits including five doubles and a pair of home runs. Other major offensive contributions were made from Adam Scheiderer and Noah Medich to name just a few.

Much like baseball, the Geneva softball team had a rough start on day one of the season. After a pair of losses to open the season, the Golden Tornadoes won five straight games and ended the first week of the season with a mark of 6-4. The pitching duo of Julie DiLonardo and Ariel Lilly got off two a great start. DiLonardo has four victories with 30 strikeouts while Lilly is posting an ERA of close to 1.00. Lilly tossed a two-hit shut-out on Saturday against Skidmore. Five regulars are hitting at least .333 with Anjelica Marsh leading the way at .444. Adriane Blake (.382), Ashley Davis (.370), Samantha Bautista (.345) and Martha Adams (.333) are all off to solid starts.
