It was a day of mixed results for the Geneva College spring athletic teams on Saturday. While the baseball and softball teams were busy splitting doubleheaders, the track and field team opened its new outdoor season with some mixed results of its own. While six student-athletes have already qualified for the NCCAA national meet, several others were held back because of injury or illness. Despite leaving many points at home, the track team did manage to go 2-2 in it dual scoring meet.

Julia Urbanski opened the 2011 track and field season in style with a pair of victories in the 800 meter and 1500 meter races. Falling just short of qualifying for the NCCAA nationals, Urbanski still managed to steal the show at the Muskingum College event. Finishing first by more than six seconds in the 800 meter race, Urbanski turned in a time of 2:27.23. In the 1500 meter race, she posted a finishing time of 5:06.69 for another first place effort. Her teammates on the womenâ??s side Aisha Moore and Mary Keen each qualified for the NCCAA nationals in the first meet of the season. Moore qualified In the triple jump with a first place distance of 33-00.50 while Keen qualified in the discus with a third place distance of 119-03.

Highlights on the menâ??s side included three national qualifying performances. Most impressively was the work done by Seth Montgomery in his first ever collegiate meet. Montgomery dominated the field in the javelin with a throw of 154-08, which was more than five feet further than his next closest competitor. Shaka Sydnor qualified in the triple jump with a distance of 41-10.00, which was good enough for second at the meet. Also finishing second was Dan Dillman with a shot put throw of 42-11.75, which was good enough for another NCCAA qualifying performance.

The baseball team returned from Florida riding high with a 9-2 overall mark in the sunshine state. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes kicked off the northern portion of their schedule with a doubleheader split against Mt. Aloysius. Matt Baer went the distance on the mound in game one as Geneva held off the Mounties by the score of 7-6. Justin McGurgan had three hits in the game to lead an 11-hit attack. Geneva posted 14 hits in the night cap but could not slow down Mt. Aloysius in a 19-6 loss that moved Genevaâ??s overall record to 10-3 on the season. The Golden Tornadoes will open up play against the PAC next weekend with a three-game series against St. Vincent beginning in Latrobe on Friday.

The Geneva softball team opened its home schedule on Saturday against Hiram College. The Golden Tornadoes watched Hiram break open a 2-0 game late and cruise to a 9-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Despite a 3-3 effort from Leah Prisuta, Geneva went just 1-20 with runners in scoring position in game one. Game two was dominated in the circle by senior hurler Ariel Lilly. Lilly posted her second shut-out of the season in leading Geneva to a 2-0 victory in the night cap. She struck out seven and allowed eight hits in the victory. Christina Fuqua hit her first collegiate homer to get Geneva on the board before a Leanne Abate single plated another run in the sixth inning. Geneva sits at 8-6 on the season as it looks ahead to hosting Point Park on Tuesday.
