As the weather continues to stay cold, the spring athletic action is just beginning to heat up. The track and field team traveled to Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday to face off against its most difficult competition to date. The softball team took care of business in its only doubleheader of the week while the baseball team dove into its first PAC action of the season.

Three more student-athletes qualified for the NCCAA track and field meet on Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes competed at Wheeling Jesuit against mainly Division I and Division II athletes. Julia Urbanski (800 meter and 1500 meter) qualified in a pair of events with a pair of top ten finishes. Kayla Jackson qualified in the javelin with a throw of 29.12 meters. On the menâ??s side, Nick Edinger finished tenth in the 5K race with a time of 15:48.61, which was good enough to send him to his second consecutive NCCAA national meet. Mary Keen posted Genevaâ??s top finish of the day with a fourth place effort in the discus. Keen finished behind three Division I athletes with a throw of 38.11 meters. In the menâ??s shot put, Dan Dillman was fourth with a toss of 13.04 meters.

Other top finishers on the day included Shannon Rech (7th in the 3K), Aisha Moore (6th in the triple jump) and Shaka Sydnor (8th in the triple jump). Genevaâ??s 4 x 100 menâ??s relay team posted a 6th place finish.

In the first PAC baseball action of the season, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a doubleheader to Saint Vincent College by the scores of 4-0 and 8-1. Genevaâ??s bats were silenced by the Bearcats after coming into the twin bill with a team batting average of .350. Mike Suluva posted four hits in the doubleheader but Geneva could not solve the Bearcats on the mound to put hits together. Geneva begins the new week with an overall record of 10-5 as it gets set for a very busy six game week within the PAC.

The Geneva softball team swept Point Park in the only action on the field last week. The Golden Tornadoes rallied back from an early 3-0 deficit to dismantle the Pioneers 11-3 in game one. The Golden Tornadoes took the night cap by the score of 5-2 to move their overall record to 10-6. Leah Prisuta sparked the offense with five hits and three runs scored in the doubleheader. She is currently leading the Geneva offensive attack with a .321 batting average. Martha Adams and Leanne Abate each posted run scoring hits in both games of the doubleheader while Julie DiLonardo picked up wins six and seven on the season. The Golden Tornadoes are set to host Penn State Beaver on Wednesday before opening the PAC schedule on Saturday at home against Bethany.
