It sure doesn't get much better than beating Grove City at anything. On Saturday night, the Golden Tornadoes put away the Wolverines at Reeves Field by the score of 23-7. The emerging PAC star Rocco Colavecchia put on another impressive display to lead the Golden Tornadoes to their second PAC victory. The Geneva soccer teams did not have the same success during their long trip down to Kentucky on Saturday. Both teams fell to Thomas More as the menâ??s winning streak was snapped and the womenâ??s losing streak was not. The Geneva cross country teams ran against some of the best Division III has to offer at Oberlin while the womenâ??s tennis team won its second consecutive PAC match. Another perfect week for the Geneva volleyball team results in a first place Golden Tornadoesâ?? team. A huge week lies ahead for the volleyball team that could very well volley them into a regular season title.

Just when you thought you had seen everything Rocco Colavecchia had to offer, he took off on a 75 yard touchdown run to put the finishing touches on Grove City on Saturday night. Colavecchia scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to make the difference in a 23-7 Geneva victory that pushed the Golden Tornadoes to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC. While the offense did enough to win the game, it was the defense that stepped up in a big way on Saturday night. Genevaâ??s defense came up with six takeaways and held the Wolverines to off the scoreboard in the final three quarters of action. Jon Bushmire grabbed his first two career interceptions and Jon Baldwin came up with a pick of his own in the end zone to preserve the lead. Tucker Nuetzel and Dillon Goodell each finished with ten tackles to lead the way. Geneva heads back to the road to face Washington & Jefferson on Saturday with the hopes of a .500 season still hanging in the balance.

The womenâ??s soccer team just cannot generate offense these days. The Golden Tornadoes dropped shut-out decisions to Bethany and Thomas More last week as they saw their losing streak reach five straight including an 0-5 mark against PAC competition. Geneva has scored just twice in those five matches and have tallied only four goals during a stretch that has seen it drop eight of the last nine matches. Playing in just her second collegiate action in goal on Saturday, Natalie Swartley came in to relieve an injured Karmyn Culbertson and allowed just one goal and made nine saves against Thomas More. Geneva will host Waynesburg on Wednesday in the home finale before heading to Grove City, Chatham and Thiel to close out the year.

In a first place showdown of undefeated conference foes, Geneva and Thomas More hooked up on Saturday in Crestview Hills. The Golden Tornadoes went away from their usual trend of falling behind early as Jeb Nash put the Golden Tornadoes in front early in the first half. The Saints rallied for a pair of first half goals and neither team could dent the scoreboard in the second stanza. Earlier in the week, Genevaâ??s overtime heroics continued as Jon Mathoslah finished off Bethany in a 2-1 decision that at the time kept the Golden Tornadoes tied for first place. Ben Makinâ??s second half goal forced the overtime session as Geneva came back for the third time in four PAC victories this year. Sitting at 10-4-1 and 4-1 in the PAC, Geneva has just four regular season matches remaining on the schedule.

Running against the best field to date in 2011, the Geneva College menâ??s and womenâ??s cross country teams got an up close look at some of the best runners in the country. With over 300 racers on both the menâ??s and womenâ??s side, it was some very fierce competition. Only Nick Edinger finished in the top 100 on the menâ??s side with a tremendous sub-27 minute effort on the 8K course. Edingerâ??s time was good enough for 44th position. Both Charles Parker and Will Pinson set personal best records of over a minute each. Freshman Aaron Ferguson posted his personal best by 1:30 and moved into Genevaâ??s #5 spot on the menâ??s side. In womenâ??s action, Shannon Rech set a personal best and finished 75th overall as Genevaâ??s only female runner in the top 100.

It took four days and three tries but Geneva and Washington & Jefferson finally were able to hook up in a PAC tennis match. After having the match postponed twice because of rain, the Golden Tornadoes finally made the match well worth the wait with an 8-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Kara Zimmerman won both singles and doubles as the Golden Tornadoes swept their six singles matches with additional victories including wins from Cassandra Califf, Julie Kline, Alison Beattie and Alyssa Kuhn.

Genevaâ??s volleyball team remains at the top of the PAC mountain after a 3-0 week with victories over Grove City, Bethany and Saint Vincent. With an overall record of 17-7 including a 12-1 mark in the PAC, the Golden Tornadoes are in the conference driverâ??s seat with only five conference matches remaining. Deana Briody continued her great work at the setter position with 146 assists and an average of over 11 assists per game for the week. Evenly distributing balls to Genevaâ??s big four, Briody is third in the PAC in assists. Freshman Erin Smith is starting to play a major role for the Golden Tornadoes. Slowly increasing her playing time at one of the middle hitter positions, Smith threw down 11 kills in Saturdayâ??s victory on just 16 swings with zero hitting errors. Kristland McCracken leads Geneva with over three kills per game.
