That collective sigh of relief you heard on College Hill at around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday evening came from the Geneva football nation after Bryan Visingardiâ??s 41 yard field split the uprights and the Golden Tornadoes survived a huge scare and came away with their first ever PAC victory and the first win of 2011. The theme of overtime on homecoming began with a 2-1 overtime victory for the menâ??s soccer team in its first ever PAC match against Washington & Jefferson. The womenâ??s soccer team had its overtime fun on Tuesday with a 1-0 thriller against Marietta. The volleyball team went 3-1 in the PAC this week including a thrilling 3-2 victory at Thomas More on Saturday. The womenâ??s cross country team took first place with the men finishing second at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational. The tennis team won its only match of the week with a convincing 8-1 effort against Thiel.

The Geneva football team hadn't lost to Saint Vincent since 1961. That 50 year run nearly came to an end if it hadn't been for the foot of Bryan Visingardi. With three field goals in the game including a 41 yarder in overtime, Visingardi helped Geneva to a 23-20 victory over the Bearcats. Genevaâ??s quarterback duo of Rocco Collavecchia and Zack Hayward combined for over 300 yards through the air with the majority of those yards being picked up by Corey Oâ??Patchen. The junior wide out caught five passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. AJ Delmonico also pulled in a touchdown pass from Hayward to help the winning cause. After a desperation heave into the end zone found a Saint Vincent receiver on the final play of regulation, Genevaâ??s defense held the Bearcats off the scoreboard in overtime to set up Visingardiâ??s heroics. Geneva sits at 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the PAC with a date at Waynesburg set for this Saturday afternoon.

The menâ??s soccer team rebounded from a 1-0 loss at Muskingum earlier in the week to pick up a victory in the PAC season opener. On Saturday, Geneva defeated Washington & Jefferson 2-1 with freshman Jeremy Troutman coming away as the hero with the game winner midway through the second overtime. Jeb Nash put Geneva on the board first before the Presidentâ??s were able to tie the game and send it into the overtime session. Evan Biedenbach picked up the victory in goal as Geneva moved its overall record to 7-3-1 including its 1-0 mark in the conference.

On Tuesday night, Risa Tillman was awarded a corner kick and she took full advantage of her opportunity. Slicing the ball directly into the corner of the net, Tillman scored the gameâ??s only goal of the match in Genevaâ??s 1-0 overtime victory over Marietta. The Golden Tornadoes opened PAC play on Saturday with a 5-1 loss to Washington & Jefferson with Julie Collins picking up the lone Geneva tally. The women are sitting at 4-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Heading into last week, the Geneva womenâ??s volleyball team was faced with its most challenging week of the season. With four matches against quality PAC opponents, much would be learned about the Golden Tornadoes by weekâ??s end. What was learned was that Geneva has a pretty good team. The Golden Tornadoes went 3-1 on the week including victories over Thiel, Saint Vincent and Thomas More. The lone loss came to Bethany who is now tied with Geneva atop the PAC standings at 8-1. Ironically, the most impressive performance of the week came in Genevaâ??s loss to Bethany. Maggie Bowersox threw down 17 kills along with five blocks and five service aces against the Bison. Geneva has an overall record of 13-7 including that 8-1 record in the PAC.

It was a very successful Saturday for Genevaâ??s cross country teams. The womenâ??s team took first place and men second place at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational. On the womenâ??s side, Shannon Rech paced the womenâ??s team with a fourth place overall finish while teammates Anna Kluitenberg, Heidi Steiner and Emily Hoobler all cracked the top ten to lead Geneva to a victory over 11 other competing schools. The menâ??s team featured a second place finish from Nick Edinger despite a couple slips on the muddy track. Teammates Nate Mansor, Charles Parker, Jacob Beschner and Aaron Ferguson all broke the top 25. Geneva will head to Carnegie Mellon for another test this coming Saturday morning.

Rain postponed Genevaâ??s only home tennis match of the week with Bethany on Friday. Geneva did get the chance to play on Wednesday and came away with an 8-1 victory at Thiel. Amy Weller and Julie Kline teamed up for an 8-0 victory in doubles while Brittany Kress and Courtney Light took care of their doubles match. Weller, Kline and Kress all won their respective singles matches with teammates Cassandra Califf, Alison Beattie and Alyssa Kuhn also coming away victorious. Genevaâ??s overall record sits at 3-4 including a 3-3 mark in conference play.
