It was the voice of Wide World of Sports Jim McKay that coined the phrase â??The thrill of victory and the agony of defeatâ??. No other comment could accurately capture the emotions of a pair of Geneva teams competing in their first PAC post-season tournaments. Coming within five minutes of capturing its first conference title, the menâ??s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to Thomas More on Friday. Just 24 hours later, the volleyball team experienced the thrill of winning the schoolâ??s first conference championship with a 3-1 victory over Bethany College.

Last Friday, the menâ??s soccer team thrilled the home crowd with an exciting 1-0 victory over Grove City to advance to its first Presidentsâ?? Athletic Conference championship. Jeb Nash took a feed from Austin Petrie and scored the gameâ??s only goal in the 78th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Butler made a pair of saves to register his first post-season victory and shut-out. Two days later, the combination of Nash and Petrie struck again for the opening goal in the conference championship match against Thomas More. When Josh Mann found the net early in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes extended their lead to 2-0 and looked to be well on their way to a championship. The Saints cut the lead in half mid-way through the second stanza and with less than five minutes remaining in regulation tied the game and sent it into overtime. Thomas More spoiled Genevaâ??s dream of a conference title with the game winning goal just five minutes into overtime. The Golden Tornadoes are sitting with an overall record of 13-5-2 as they will await the upcoming NCCAA East Regional tournament with a date and time to be announced.

The electricity in Metheny Fieldhouse was something to remember on both Friday and Saturday as the Geneva College volleyball team was seeking its first conference title. On Friday night, the Golden Tornadoes cruised to a 3-0 victory over Westminster to advance to the PAC finals on Saturday. Playing host to Bethany College, the only team to hand Geneva a conference loss this year, the Golden Tornadoes found themselves down 1-0 after the Bison took game one 25-23. Top seeded Geneva was not about to be denied as it won the next three games to capture the schoolâ??s first title. In the process, the Golden Tornadoes improved to 27-8 breaking the single season record for victories that was just set one year ago. Kristland McCracken had 21 kills and Ashley Davis added 15 in the victory. Sophomore setter Deanna Briody posted an impressive 57 assists to lead the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva will find out later this morning which NCAA regional it will be headed to this weekend. The NCAA has eight regional tournaments with each champion advancing to an eight-team national tournament.

Both the cross country teams and the football team enjoyed the weekend off and will close out the 2011 season this coming weekend. The cross country teams will head to Cedarville for the NCCAA national meet while the football team heads to New Wilmington for the annual rivalry against Westminster College. Meanwhile, the menâ??s and womenâ??s basketball teams are just eight days away from opening the 2011-12 season at Penn State Greater Allegheny on November 15.
