It was quite an impressive start to the indoor track and field season for Genevaâ??s men and women. Posting a total of 11 top ten performances at the Mid-January Meet at Baldwin-Wallace College, the Golden Tornadoes also posted three NCCAA national qualifying performances. The basketball teams didnâ??t have nearly as much fun on Saturday as they each dropped decisions to Thomas More on the traditionally long road trip to Kentucky. Both teams fell twice last week and will look to get back on the winning track this week as they enter the final four weeks of the regular season.

Nick Edinger showed up at Baldwin-Wallace in mid-season form. The junior distance runner posted a new school record time of 9:00.95 in the 3K race for a fourth place finish and a spot in his third consecutive NCCAA national indoor meet. In the 5K race, teammates Jacob Beschner and Charles Parker finished third and fourth respectively to round out the day.

In womenâ??s action, Geneva posted eight top ten finishes including three alone in the shot put event. Katherine Michalak and Kathryn Regalado each qualified for the NCCAA national meet with fourth and fifth finishes. Michalak threw a distance of 36-02.25 and Regalado followed with a mark of 36-00.25. Teammate Bethany Podnar finished tenth in the shot put event with a final distance of 30-01.50. Liz Michalak turned in a pair of top ten finishes in the 200 meter dash (10th) and the long jump (7th). In the distance events, Anaa Kluitenberg (7th) turned in a time of 5:52.48 in the one mile event. Alayna Merckle finished 7th and Emily Hoobler 10th in the 3000 meter race.

After getting back on track with a victory against W & J a week ago Saturday, the Geneva College menâ??s basketball dropped a pair of PAC road decisions this past week. The week opened with a heartbreaking 82-81 overtime loss to Westminster where newly acquired forward Keynon Jackson finished with 19 points including the final 11 points of regulation time. David Phillips scored 29 points against Thomas More on Saturday but it wasnâ??t enough to slow down the Saints in a 91-77 final. The Golden Tornadoes begin the new week tied for sixth in the PAC with a 3-6 conference record and a mark of 4-13 overall. They will return home on Wednesday to face Bethany before a road date with Waynesburg on Saturday.

Genevaâ??s women have dropped four straight games and have fallen to 3-14 overall and 2-8 in conference play. This past week, the Golden Tornadoes gave a pesky effort against Westminster but dropped a 55-43 decision despite Samantha Fisherâ??s 18 points and ten rebounds. The Golden Tornadoes got another dose of the six-time defending champion Thomas More Saints on Saturday in a 78-36 loss in a game that featured an 11-point effort from Fisher. The Golden Tornadoes are one game back from eighth place in the PAC, which is where they need to finish to qualify for a post-season spot in the conference tournament. They will look to move toward that end with a home game against Bethany and on the road at Waynesburg next Saturday.
