Genevaâ??s track and field team had a pair of tests last week and passed them both. With more impressive highlights and top finishes, the Golden Tornadoes continue to burn up the track in the early spring events. Genevaâ??s baseball team split a PAC doubleheader with Saint Vincent on Friday and the softball team rebounded from an early week doubleheader loss to win a pair on Friday.

Liz Michalak took home her first ever first place finish in grand style over the weekend. The senior from Ashville, NY won the heptathlon event at Wheeling Jesuit by finishing in the top five in each of the seven events. Her total score of 3726 points was more than 100 points better than the next closest competitor. Her finish also qualified her for the NCCAA national meet. Teammate Samantha Fisher finished with 2514 points and also qualified nationally. Earlier in the week, Michalak finished second in the long jump to qualify in that event.

Genevaâ??s sprinters gave a tremendous performance at Grove City last Tuesday. The menâ??s highlight came in the 4 x 100 relay where Geneva finished first with a time of 43.37, which was only .02 behind the all-time record. Comprised of Nick Agostinelli, Josh Guiser, John-Henry Jarwood and Wes Marquis, the Golden Tornadoes took home first place. Tyler French qualified in the discus event less than a week after also qualifying in the shot put.

Over the weekend, Nick Edinger was back in his familiar 5000 meter event and he didnâ??t disappoint. Edinger finished first against a primarily NCAA Division II field with a personal best time of 15:21.93. Edinger is now just one second behind Genevaâ??s all-time record.

Genevaâ??s baseball week opened with a non-conference loss to Penn State Beaver by the score of 6-4. Despite a solid four innings of shut-out pitching from Caleb Kilgore, the Golden Tornadoes could not rally past the Lions. On Friday, Geneva traveled to Saint Vincent and picked up a split against the Bearcats to move its overall record to 9-8 including a 3-2 mark in conference play. Jon Bushmire provided some punch to the offense with a pair of solo homers in the 9-5 nightcap victory. Bushmire, Joel Gatti and T.J. Lambert each had a pair of hits in the victory. Kilgore went the distance in game two to pick up the victory to close out a solid week on the hill. Geneva will have a busy week coming up with six conference games beginning with a single game against Saint Vincent on Monday at 3:30 pm at 33rd Street Field.

For only the third time in five years since moving to its new field on campus, the Geneva softball team suffered an opponentâ??s doubleheader sweep. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a pair of games to Mt. Aloysius last Wednesday to see its record fall back to .500 at 9-9. Just 48 hours later, Genevaâ??s softball team responded with a sweep of its own against a Hiram College team that came one victory away from qualifying from last yearâ??s Division III World Series. Julie DiLonardo picked up both victories in the wins on Friday while Geneva saw its offense perk up a bit in a 6-2 game one victory. Christina Fuqua had game winning RBIâ??s in both ends of the doubleheader as Geneva came back from a 2-0 deficit to take game one before holding on for a 1-0 victory in the night cap. The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Baldwin-Wallace on Wednesday before opening up PAC play at home on Saturday against Waynesburg.
