Records continue to fall in the track and field record book as the Golden Tornadoes had another solid effort this weekend. The baseball team put an end to its short losing streak by salvaging a split against Thiel on Saturday while the softball team opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Waynesburg.

It seems as though nothing is going to stop the pursuit of Nick Edinger to break every Geneva record in sight. The junior distance runner shattered the schoolâ??s all-time record in the 5000 meter event by 20 seconds. Finishing fifth overall at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, Edinger posted a time of 15:00.91, breaking the previous record of 15:20. Edingerâ??s time has him ranked 11th in NCAA Division III. Katherine Michalak highlighted the womenâ??s meet with a first place finish in the shot put while also breaking the school record. Michalak threw just over 40 feet breaking the previous record by over a foot. The previous womenâ??s shot put record has stood since 1992. Michalak currently ranks 21 st in the nation.

Other highlights for the women included Alayna Merkleâ??s second place finish in the 1500 meter event and qualifying time, although she will most likely run the 5000 meter race at nationals. Emily Hoobler qualified for the NCCAA nationals with a time of 19:02 in the 5000 meter event. Teammate Shannon Rech also qualified in the 5000 with a mark of 19:09.

In other menâ??s action, Chuck Walters qualified for the national meet with a mark of 33:47 in the 10000 meter race while Mark Filtz also qualified for his efforts in the triple jump.

Genevaâ??s baseball team was suffering through a four-game losing streak despite solid pitching from sophomore Mike Jefferies. Jefferies was the hard luck loser in a 1-0 loss to W & J on Tuesday and then dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Thiel on Saturday in game one of that doubleheader. The Golden Tornadoes rebounded in game two of the doubleheader with a 9-5 victory over the Tomcats. The week began with one of the craziest games in school history as Geneva defeated Saint Vincent 21-20 on 33rd Street. The game featured a 13-run first inning by the Golden Tornadoes that was highlighted by a grand slam from TJ Lambert and a three-run home from Noah Medich. Lambert finished with six RBI in the victory. Geneva ended the week with an overall record of 11-12 including a 5-6 mark in conference play. Another busy week is upcoming for the Golden Tornadoes with four PAC games including a four-game series with Westminster.

The Geneva softball team got off on the right foot in its first ever PAC games this weekend. The last Geneva team to finally open its first year of conference play, the Golden Tornadoes made the wait worthwhile with a doubleheader sweep over Waynesburg. Ashley Davis knocked in a pair in game one as the Golden Tornadoes held on for a 3-2 victory. Davis opened her week with the first home run of her career in Genevaâ??s 4-3 victory at Baldwin-Wallace in game one of a doubleheader split. In game two on Saturday, Genevaâ??s bats came alive with 15 hits including a 4-4 effort from Christina Fuqua in a 15-5 victory. The Golden Tornadoes are 14-10 overall and 2-0 in the PAC as they prepare for games against Saint Vincent and Grove City this week.
