It had been three years since the Geneva College track and field team hosted a meet. The Golden Tornadoes welcomed three PAC foes to Merriman Complex last week as a precursor to the PAC Championships that will take place this coming weekend on Genevaâ??s campus. Genevaâ??s baseball team had a tough trip to Kentucky while the softball team split a doubleheader with first place Westminster following a four-game sweep that clinched the NCCAA East regional title.

Genevaâ??s men and women finished third out of the four schools but posted some outstanding individual efforts throughout the afternoon. Nick Agostinelli is one of the few Geneva College track athletes that had competed at Merriman Athletic Complex in the last two years. Agostinelli, a Beaver Falls High School product, competed for the Tigers on Genevaâ??s campus. On Tuesday, Agostinelli looked right at home with a first place finish in the 100 meter race. Posting a personal best time of 11.23, Agostinelli took home the top prize for the Golden Tornadoes. In other highlights for the menâ??s team, Tyler French posted a personal best 47-08.5 to win the shot put event. Genevaâ??s Matt Logan and Rick Truesdell finished fourth and fifth in the same event. Nick Edinger defeated all other college athletes in the 1500 meter event with a time of 4:06.80. The only person that defeated Edinger was Geneva sprints coach and Golden Tornado alum Chris Thompson.

Genevaâ??s women posted several highlight performances on Tuesday. Kathryn Regalado won the shot put and the discus events. In the shot, Regalado won with a distance of 38-10.25 before throwing 118-06 to win the discus. Katherine Michalak finished third in the shot and Mary Keen was second in the discus. Emily Hoobler ran a sub-19 in the 5K with a big personal best performance good enough for second place. Heidi Steiner finished third in the 1500 meter event just one second off of an NCCAA qualifying time. Teammate Alayna Merkle finished second in the 1500 meter race with a mark of 4:59.22.

Genevaâ??s all-around athlete Liz Michalak was all over the track and field on Tuesday. Michalak competed in six events and compiled 30 points for the Golden Tornadoes. She posted a first place finish in the high jump with a personal best distance of 5-00.25. She then finished second in the long jump, third in the javelin and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 17.78. As if that wasnâ??t enough, she anchored both the 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 relay helping the Golden Tornadoes finish third in both events.

Genevaâ??s baseball team dropped a three-game series at Thomas More over the weekend. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday. The series started on a good foot as Mike Jeffreys launched a leadoff home run in game one and Adam Scheiderer also added a solo blast in the game one loss. Scheiderer provide much of the only offense on Saturday as he knocked in three of Genevaâ??s four runs on one swing with a bases clearing double. The Golden Tornadoes finished the week at 14-19 overall and 8-13 in conference play. Following a non-conference doubleheader at Medaille on Tuesday, Geneva will close out the regular season with a three-game series against Waynesburg next weekend.

The Geneva softball team opened the week with four consecutive victories over Houghton College in the NCCAA East region tournament. The Golden Tornadoes outscored the Highlanders 34-4 in the four-game set to receive an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament in May. Christina Fuqua led the offensive charge with a .524 average last week with eight runs scored and ten RBI. Geneva got back into conference play on Wednesday with a doubleheader split against first place Westminster. After dropping game one 3-1, the Golden Tornadoes rallied for a 6-1 win in the night cap. Ashley Davis launched a two-run homer in the first inning which was more than enough for Julie DiLonardo to pick up her 19th victory of the season. DiLonardo became the first pitcher in school history to surpass the 200 strikeout mark in a single season. She also broke the career mark for strikeouts with 498 in the last four years. Geneva sits at 23-15 for the season with a 7-5 mark in conference play. Six key PAC games this week will determine the conference play-off fate of the Golden Tornadoes.
