There is much excitement surrounding the Geneva College menâ??s soccer team these days with a current four-game winning streak to go along with the upcoming home match against the defending NCAA Division III national champions. The womenâ??s soccer team finished a .500 week with a win, a loss and a tie while the womenâ??s tennis team picked up its first PAC victory of the season. The football team will look to get off the mat this week with its first PAC home game of the season in search of its first victory of 2011. While the cross country teams enjoyed a weekend away from the course they will prepare this week for another outing in Latrobe. Finally, the womenâ??s volleyball team won a pair of PAC matches to remain unbeaten in the conference but came up winless over the weekend at the Hiram College tournament.

Jake McCracken found the net five times last week in helping to lead Geneva to a perfect 3-0 record and improve to 5-1-1 on the season. The Golden Tornadoes have currently won four straight overall including victories over LaRoche, Malone and Franciscan last week. McCracken registered a hat trick in the 4-1 win over Malone as junior goalkeeper Evan Biedenbach picked up his first win of the season. On Wednesday, Geneva took care of Malone University by the score of 3-1 after spotting the Pioneers the opening goal. Tallies from McCracken, Jon Mathoslah and David Harwood proved to be the difference in the win. Geneva dominated Franciscan on Saturday by the score of 5-0 with McCracken again opening the scoring. Garrett Masters, Teddy Kryzwiecki, Alex Rosenbaum and Josh Mann each scored their first goals of the season to help aid the victory. Biedenbach again got the victory in goal with his first shut-out of the season. Geneva will host a pair of home matches this week with Marietta on Wednesday before it prepares to host NCAA Division III defending national champion Messiah on Saturday at 4 p.m.

In womenâ??s soccer action, Geneva came up with a frenzied comeback last Monday to salvage a 2-2 against LaRoche. Trailing the Red hawks 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match, the Golden Tornadoes went to work. Maura Allen scored to pull Geneva within a goal before Becca Shaw lofted a beautiful shot into the back of the net to tie the score in the final moments of regulation time. Geneva used that momentum on Wednesday with a 4-0 blanking of Pitt-Greensburg. Rhetta King scored twice to lead the offensive attack against the Bobcats. On Saturday, Geneva dropped a 4-1 decision to Franciscan with Allen scoring her team leading eighth goal of the season for the only offense of the night. The Golden Tornadoes are sitting a 3-3-1 for the year and will hit the road this week for matches at Ursuline and Carlow.

Following a 9-0 loss to Westminster on Wednesday, the Geneva tennis team was anxious for its first victory of 2011 when Thomas More came calling on Saturday. In a thrilling 5-4 victory, the Golden Tornadoes came from behind to get that initial victory of the season. Brittany Kress stole the show with a victory in doubles alongside partner Courtney Light followed by an amazing comeback victory in singles that proved to be the difference in the match. Kress lost the first set of her singles match 6-0. However, she managed to rally for victories in the second and third set by the scores of 7-5, 7-5 to take the win and give the Golden Tornadoes their first PAC victory. Other winners on Saturday included Cassandra Califf and Julie Kline. Kline also won her doubles match with partner Amy Weller. Geneva is 1-3 overall including a 1-2 mark within the PAC.

It was a quiet weekend for the Geneva College cross country teams as they enjoyed their first weekend away from the course this fall. The Golden Tornadoes had competed on each of the first two Saturdayâ??s in September and will be back in action this coming Saturday In Latrobe at Saint Vincent College.

It was going to be a difficult challenge for the Geneva football team when the schedule was released last year. Following the home opener with Frostburg State, the Golden Tornadoes were sent out on road tests against Albright and Thomas More. With three weeks in the books, Geneva is still searching for its first victory with an 0-3 overall record. The Golden Tornadoes dropped their first PAC game on Saturday with a 41-6 decision against Thomas More. The three-time defending PAC champions took advantage of four Geneva turnovers to put the game away. The Golden Tornadoes managed to avoid a shut-out with an 18 play touchdown drive in the fourth quarter capped by a one yard run from Jordan Curry. Rocco Collevecchia was a bright spot on offense with ten receptions for 73 yards. The 0-3 start is the first for Geneva since 1992 and the first ever during the 19 year head coaching tenure of Geno DeMarco. The Golden Tornadoes will host their first ever PAC game on Saturday night when Bethany College comes to Reeves Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The good news for the Geneva volleyball team is that it remains in first place in the PAC with a perfect 5-0 record after defeating Chatham and Westminster last Tuesday evening. The bad news is that it dropped four consecutive matches over the weekend at the Hiram College Tournament. Playing some very tough Division III competition, Geneva dropped matches to Mt. Union, Otterbein, Case and Hiram. Geneva opened the tournament with a five-game loss to Mt. Union before falling in straight sets to Otterbein on Friday night. Deanna Briody combined for 80 assists in the two losses on Saturday as she distributed balls to kill leaders Maggie Bowersox, Ashley Davis and Kristland McCracken. The trio combined for 62 kills in losses to Hiram and Case Western. Geneva has an overall record of 7-6 and will head back to Ohio this weekend for three matches at the Marietta College Tournament.
