geneva_tornado_logo.jpgIt finally looks and feels like spring outside and the Geneva College spring sports teams finally were able to get back on schedule. The track and field team took advantage of perfect conditions at Mount Union on Saturday while the baseball and softball teams got back to work in the Presidentsâ?? Athletic Conference.

The track and field team turned in some top notch performances over the weekend. Most notably, the distance runners for Geneva were most impressive in the names of Alayna Merkle for the women and Nick Edinger for the men. Merkle crossed the line in 18:50 in the 1500 meter event and took home the top prize against a very impressive field. Edinger ran a 15:06 time in the 5000 meter event and beat all other college competitors.

In the womenâ??s field events, Katherine Michalak and Sara Williams each turned in top five finishes in the shot put. Michalak finished third overall with a distance of 38-02.75 and Williams was fifth at 38-08.50. Mary Keen turned in a seventh place finish in the discus with a mark of 111-06. Finally, Kayla Jackson and Lydia Steele each cracked the top five in the javelin.

In menâ??s action, Ed Schuster and Stephen Polite finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 100 meter dash. Jacob Mellinger turned in a pair of top performances with an eighth place finish in the 200 meter event and a fifth place spot in the 400 meter race. Tyler French took top billing for the men in the field events with a seventh place finish in the shot put and a second place spot in the discus. Jordan Rupert was once again impressive with a second place finish in the javelin with a distance of 162-08.

The baseball team managed to split with Saint Vincent last Tuesday before dropping a three-game set to Thiel over the weekend. In the victory last Saturday, Mike Jeffreys scattered four hits over six innings while striking out 11 batters in the win. Jeffreys has also been getting it done at the plate with a .474 average (9-19) for the week. He had four multiple hit games out of the five games that were played. Jeffreys narrowly missed another victory in Saturdayâ??s night cap at Thiel in a 4-3 loss. The Golden Tornadoes got at least one hit from eight of their starters but came up on the short end of a one-run decision. Geneva has another busy week ahead with a total of six games slated over the next six days including a make-up home doubleheader with Grove City on Monday afternoon. Geneva begins the new week with an overall record of 7-13 including a 2-6 mark in the PAC.

Genevaâ??s softball team enjoyed a perfect 6-0 week and have increased its current win streak to eight games. The Golden Tornadoes swept conference doubleheaders from Saint Vincent, Waynesburg and Grove City last week to move to the top of the PAC standings with a 6-0 record. Overall, Genevaâ??s eight-game win streak has pushed its record to 12-8. Samantha Johnson was nearly unhittable this past week allowing just one earned run in 25 innings of work. She was a perfect 4-0 in the circle while also hitting .388 with four RBIâ??s at the plate. Fellow freshman Laura Beck was 9-18 (.500) at the plate during the week and Leah Prisuta also hit at a .388 clip during the six conference games. Andrea Hinds won a pair of games in the circle for Geneva against Saint Vincent and Waynesburg. Hinds tossed her first career shut-out against the Bearcats allowing just two hits along the way.
