Just one week into the Geneva College athletic season, the record books are already outdated. Records fell at the Westminster Invitational as both Geneva cross country teams came away with victories. The football record book took an incredible hit as the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 56-53 decision to Frostburg State in the highest scoring game in school history. Nobody broke any records for the Geneva College volleyball team, but the defending PAC champions opened the 2012 season in style with a 4-0 record at the Gettysburg Tournament. Womenâ??s tennis dropped its first match of the season and had its Saturday action interrupted by rain. In soccer action, the men and women each split their first two matches of the season.

It was really only a matter a time before Nick Edinger reached the top of the mountain. On Saturday, Edinger took home top honors at the Westminster Invitational as the senior set a school record with his time of 25:45 on the 8K course. Teammate Owen Struck finished third while Jacob Beschner (6), Charles Parker (14) and Lon Hambrice (20) helped lead Geneva to an overall win. Perhaps even more impressive was the dominant performance by Genevaâ??s women. Posting just 21 points, the Golden Tornadoes crushed the next closest team by over 40 points. Freshman Sarah-Noel Meek won her very first meet with a time of 24:00, which is the sixth fastest in school history. Meek beat the next closest competitor by an astounding 58 seconds. Teammates Heidi Steiner (4), Alayna Merkle (5), Shannon Rech (7) and Anna Kluitenberg (8) each broke the top ten as Geneva cruised to an easy opening meet victory.

Genevaâ??s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Malone University to open the 2012 season. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes opened the PAC schedule but were unable to finish the match. Leading 4-2 over Chatham, the weather did not cooperate and the match will need to be completed at a later date. Alison Beattie took home top honors with the only singles victory against Malone. Beattie went three sets before winning a 10-8 tiebreaker to help Geneva avoid a shut-out against the Pioneers.

It was an exciting opening weekend for womenâ??s soccer. After dropping a 2-1 decision to Pitt-Bradford on Friday, the Golden Tornadoes beat Muskingum and the weather 2-1 for their first victory of the season. Heidi Mann scored her first collegiate goal in Genevaâ??s 2-1 loss on Friday and did herself one better in the win on Saturday. Mann scored both goals in the 2-1 victory over Muskingum including the overtime game winner four minutes into double overtime. Freshman goalkeeper Anna McMullen picked up her first victory and has already made 13 saves to go along with her 1.40 goals against average early in the season. Geneva and Muskingum withstood two weather delays in a match that lasted nearly three and half hours.

Genevaâ??s menâ??s soccer team rallied for a weekend split at the Oberlin College tournament. After dropping a 1-0 decision to the host school on Friday, the Golden Tornadoes got a pair of goals from Jeb Nash in a 2-0 decision over Heidelberg. Bryan Butler made five saves on Saturday to earn his first victory and first shut-out of the season. The Golden Tornadoes head to Fredonia State on Tuesday before they return for the home opener against Allegheny on Saturday night.

To nobodyâ??s surprise, the Geneva College volleyball team started in very familiar fashion. The Golden Tornadoes went 4-0 at the Gettysburg College Tournament with victories over Penn State Behrend, Gettysburg, Dickinson and Messiah. In those four matches, Geneva dropped just one set as it cruised to a perfect weekend. Defending PAC player of the year Deanna Briody was named to the all-tournament team as she finished the weekend with 111 assists in set sets. Maggie Bowersox was a machine at the net with an impressive .511 hitting percentage and Ashley Davis led the team with 33 kills. Geneva opens defense of its conference title on Wednesday at Saint Vincent.

The Geneva football record book for 2012 hasnâ??t even left the printer yet but changes are already coming for 2013. In a football game that resembled more of a track meet, Geneva and Frostburg combined for 106 points in the highest scoring game in school history. Junior quarterback Zack Hayward is most likely somewhere on campus icing his arm after the most impressive passing game in 121 years of Geneva football. Hayward completed 39-49 passes for an unthinkable 535 yards and seven touchdowns.

Four different receivers caught at least six passes with Corey Oâ??Patchen (141 yards) and Josh Guiser (132 yards) leading the way through the air. Guiser scored on a seven yard reception with just 1:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats answered with the game winning touchdown with just ten seconds remaining in regulation for an early season heartbreak. In a game that saw the defense allow 56 points, it was senior Brett Hutira that more than stood out for Geneva. Hutira posted 20 tackles, the sixth highest single game total in school history. Geneva will look for its first victory on Saturday when it travels to nationally ranked Hobart College.
