God Is Bigger Than Your Final Exams

God’s ways are mysterious. While we’re here on this earth, we won’t be able to understand why He does the things He does. Sending us trials and tribulations is one of these things. We feel like we have done something wrong or displeased God in some way if we are experiencing a trial in our lives. This is not true at all! James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” We are called to persevere in the hardships in our lives as a form of obedience to God.

Persevering is a lot easier said than done, especially when we think of the tribulations in our own lives. For some, this might be a really difficult job that is hard to go back to every single day; for others, their trial might be a class where the teacher is unfair. Around this time of the year, most students have one specific hardship on their minds: final exams. Final exams are funny things because we’ve been taking them for years now, but they don’t seem to be getting any easier and stress us out more every year. We can almost feel our bodies start to quake upon simply hearing the word “finals.” We dread those 15-page papers, 100 fill-in-the-blanks, and 20-minute oral presentations that come at the end of every semester. The problem here is that we are not looking at final exams like trials sent from God.

Final exams are not fun, but we need to remember what the Bible says about them. James 1:3 says, “... the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” We need to first have faith that God is big enough, strong enough, and loves us enough to bring us through any hardship we are facing. Then that faith is able to produce perseverance in us. Since we established that strong faith in God’s power and control in whatever trial we are facing, we are able to face any kind of hardship because we know that God will always sustain us.

It’s hard to believe that something good can come from such bad situations, but anything is possible through God. The Bible even says that we can benefit from hard things in our lives. 1 Peter 1:7 says, “These [trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” We are able to praise, glorify, and honor Jesus when we go through trials.

Now, how are we to apply this to final exams? Praying and having faith that God will give you the energy, wisdom, strength, and endurance to study for and take your final exams will calm you down because you know that He is in control of all things. This is the peace that surpasses all understanding that the Bible talks about in Philippians. Please know that the God of the universe has got you in His hands and He will never let you go, even through your final exams.
