The Power of an Internship

Are you tired of learning about your field but not actively doing something within it?  Now’s the time to consider an internship!  During an internship, students have the chance to dip their toes into the field for a few months and see exactly how they fit into the field. Internships provide students so many great opportunities with field experience, networking and future employment possibilities.

Super Intern

Internships also provide great networking opportunities. Working in your desired field gives you contacts with employers and lays the groundwork for when you start applying for full time work. Geneva is great about incorporating internships and field experience into majors. Look at our human services major where students have a 40-hour internship for an entire semester! Many times students may think that they cannot fit an internship in with a traditional course load, but if you talk with your advisor they can help you coordinate your schedule to make it happen.

Internships also have the chance to lead to full time work after graduation. Junior accounting major Heather Vizino had a positive experience with her internship this past summer, where she learned more about how the accounting world works and contributed to real-life accounting scenarios.  Her company was so impressed with her that they told her they want to hire her upon graduation. That’s exciting!

Internships are a great opportunity for students to get connected in their field, network with employers or get a head start on finding a full time job. If you are a student looking for an internship please stop by the Career Development Center for assistance with the search process!
