Geneva College has a long and proud history of athletics, from holding the first college basketball game in 1893 to the inclusion of alumni Cal Hubbard in both the NFL and MLB Halls of Fame. Current student-athletes can participate in the long tradition of athletic success in any of 19 NCAA Division III varsity sports at Geneva College. Student-athletes experience a variety of benefits while continuing their athletic careers in college. Here are four benefits for Geneva College student-athletes:

  1. Support from an excellent coaching staff

Being a member of an athletics team provides personal and academic support. Student-athletes must required a minimum GPA of 2.0, which means that coaches are invested in academic success. Whether it is mandatory study hours overseen by a coach, or open hours where you can walk into your coach’s office and have a quiet place to study, the athletics staff is devoted to academic success. Beyond the academics, coaches often serve as mentors for student-athletes, modeling how Christ-centered living affects the athletic world. It is seen in the coaching on the field or on the court but also in quiet conversations about life in general. the coaches serve and support their student-athletes.

  1. Develop cross-major friendships

Geneva College student-athletes have the opportunity not always found at larger schools to grow deep friendships with people with whom they may not normally come into contact. These interactions support Geneva’s core values of fostering academic strength and honoring one another. Students who study the humanities, education, or communication can compete alongside of computer science, business, and accounting majors. Participation in Geneva College athletics strengthens the whole Geneva community.

  1. Personal character growth

It is true that being a college athlete is difficult. It takes time out of your schedule and works your body and your mind. However, the benefits of exercise are well documented. Athletes enjoy all of these benefits, from better physical health and strength to less stress and more happiness.  More than that, those who excel in both athletics and academics are well poised to take on the chaos of a post-college life. Being a student-athlete necessitates a strong work ethic and skilled time management. Developing these skills through participation in sports is a fantastic opportunity.

  1. Growing in Teamwork Skills

Teamwork is one of the most essential skills for thriving in a workplace scenario, and athletics develops team skills as well as personal skills. Participation in athletics requires knowledge of others and their abilities. Not only must athletes know their teammates, but they must also recognize that the team’s success can depend on others’ performances. Student-athletes learn to trust and rely on their teammates all the time, whether in practice or when the game is on the line. This extreme level of trust leads to both athletic and career success.
