Distinctive Learning at Geneva and Beyond

Geneva College has once again been recognized as a College of Distinction for 2016-2017 in the Overall, Pennsylvania and Christian College categories. Geneva was positively evaluated in four overarching distinctions – Engagement, Teaching, Community and Outcomes. The evaluating organization, Colleges of Distinction, said that Geneva provides “an innovative, engaged experience that prepares student for successful careers, active citizenship, and lifelong learning.”

Let’s dig into this a little deeper to see just how Geneva College manages to deliver such a distinctive education to students.

Academics – “a truly great school must emphasize core competencies such as critical thinking, writing, oral communication, research, and global perspectives.”

The real world consists of more than just job skills. It takes a whole person to live a full life – work, family, faith and service, citizenship, etc. Summoning the best of a liberal arts tradition, Geneva prepares the whole person. Geneva’s mission emphasizes “comprehensive education” and for anyone who has engaged with the curriculum, they would acknowledge the wide scope of educational opportunities required to graduate provides the competencies that will serve the graduate and their circle of influence in every area of their life.

Out of Classroom Learning – “must offer dynamic, out-of-classroom learning, intensive study abroad programs, and other experiential learning opportunities.”

Another vital part of the Geneva mission is equipping students for faithful and fruitful service to God and neighbor. So, Geneva has experiential learning, service learning, special speakers, the Honors Programs, online courses and study abroad options for just about any major – e.g., Biology, Business, Communication, Engineering, Ministry, Music, Social Sciences.  These programs allow students to get out into the world, learn professional and leadership skills, and bless their neighbors nearby and around the world.

Study abroad programs take Geneva students to five continents with locales such as Italy, Scotland, China, Tokyo, Australia, and more.

Service trips provide students the opportunity to make a difference in U.S. inner cities and on global missions, working and building relationships with the served and each other.

Adventure trips are available to explore God’s wilderness through weekend or over-break  excursions for activities like kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, adventure cycling & rock climbing. Students can also take on the high ropes course locally or the indoor bouldering wall.

There are also local community engagement programs – “Our Town,” a day of service on-campus, helps students find experiential learning and service opportunities in the local community. Activities include after-school tutoring, helping in senior care centers, working community gardens, building with Habitat for Humanity, loving God’s children with Big Brothers Big Sisters and many more.

It’s wonderful that Geneva College is recognized as a College of Distinction, but it is clear that the vast array of high-quality learning opportunities is not provided for the awards. It is to teach students to engage in their community and to learn to love lifetime learning – that is a distinctive outcome to be proud of.
