Reaching Your Audience Through Blogging: What to Do and Not to Do

Blogging continues to be one of the best resources individuals have today for reaching an audience. Whether your blog is for personal needs or you are developing a professional blog for a company, it's essential not only to create a blog but also to craft one that has the foundation for true success. How do you do that? How do you get your message out to readers in an effective manner?

Don't Make These Mistakes

Blogging is a process. It takes time. It requires a great deal of hard work, but it can be very fulfilling when it goes well. Having a viral blog isn't always the best thing, either. Rather, you'll want to define what your message is, who your readers are, and the right content to deliver it all. To get started, avoid these very common mistakes.

  • Don't focus on word count. Blog posts shouldn't be a specific number of words. Use as many as it takes to get your message out.
  • Don't forget the images. This could be one of the most powerful tools you have to grab a reader's attention as they scroll through their social media posts.
  • Don't forget to engage your audience. You are not talking to them, but with them. Ensure you are always engaging, asking questions, and relating to your readers.
  • Don't forget to find out who those readers are. Have you defined who your target audience is and where they are likely going to find you? Could it be Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn?
  • Don't forget to ask your readers for input. What do they want to know and need to know to interact with you. And, encourage them to share with you!

Do Make These Changes

Now that you know what mistakes to avoid, it is time to think about all of the things that are going to make your blog successful. Remember that this is a learning and growing experience. It's going to take time to get just right.

  • Do set goals. How often will you blog (stick to it) and how often will you link to social media?
  • Do be yourself. Blogs are not formal, sophisticated pages. They are a place meant to interact with and engage readers. Let your personality come through in each of your posts.
  • Do mix things up. Why not do a video post one day and the next post a question and answer session? There are plenty of ways to make your blog interesting.
  • Do create and stick to a consistent message. No matter what your message is, whether it is a brand you are developing or not, ensure it stays on track.
  • Learn and grow your skills. This is big work. Consider the Geneva College online Public Relations course for more in-depth solutions to relating to your audience.

So if you like blogging, chances are good that you like words and storytelling. You know and appreciate the power to influence through thoughts and ideas. And you understand Proverbs 25:11, “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” So how can you put that talent to use when it comes to a career? Easy.
