Your Body Is a Temple

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? – 1 Cor. 6:19 (NAS)

The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout, held every third Thursday in November, is a day to encourage Americans to stop smoking. It’s a day when people who want to quit can make the change in their lives for the day, start their quit journey, or develop their quit plan. And it is important as smoking is estimated to cause or contribute to one in every five deaths in the country.

Cigarette smoking rates have dropped considerably in the last 50 years; from 42% in 1965 to 17% in 2014, according to However, other types of smoking – cigar, pipe, and hookah – are on the rise.

Research shows that quitting has immediate and long-term benefits at any age, including blood pressure drop, improved circulation, reduction in coughing and shortness of breath, and even a reduction by half in risk of coronary heart disease and cancer risk.

As Christians, we are reminded by Paul that we were bought with a price, that we are not our own, and that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Smoking is a hard habit to break but it is worth it to ourselves, our loved ones, and God. Other controllable health issues are just as important in following God’s will about our bodies – healthy eating, exercise, sleep. We owe it to our Heavenly Father to take care of the temple He has given to us.

At Geneva, students are provided with healthy choices in the cafeteria, a well-equipped fitness center, and a health & wellness center. College should be about preparing the whole person – mind, body, and soul – for good work. Care and maintenance of God’s temple is critical. It’s not easy but Geneva makes it easier.
