Last fall, a multigenerational group of alumni in the Pittsburgh area launched a book study to provide a regular time of intellectual engagement, Christian fellowship, and devoted prayer for the mission and needs of Geneva College. The group adopted the name “The McCartney Society” in honor of Presbyterian minister Clarence Macartney, a bold defender of the orthodox Christian faith in the early years of the 20th century and the namesake of Geneva College’s McCartney Library.
The concept of the McCartney Society is simple: alumni and friends of Geneva College gathering to discuss great works of literature in order to cultivate practical wisdom for the Christian life. The McCartney Society seeks to continue the conversations begun in Geneva’s Humanities core curriculum, providing edification and fellowship for graduates and friends of the college as they navigate their callings in the marketplace, the academy, and the church.
In light of the continued uncertainty of the public health situation, the McCartney Society is going “on the grid”—and it’s also going global. We invite all alumni and friends of Geneva College join us as we discuss Os Guinness’ book Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Lost Art of Christian Persuasion. We ask that those participating in the first meeting please read the Introduction and Chapter 1 prior to the August 6 discussion. Meetings will be held every 6 to 8 weeks for an hour at a time; look for a finalized schedule in a future update. All who participate will receive a special McCartney Society bookmark.
Now as much as ever, the Christian faith needs bold, winsome, and charitable advocates in all professions and vocations. Consider joining the McCartney Society this fall as we seek to explore the lifelong implications of Pro Christo et Patria while encouraging one another as a community of Geneva College graduates.
Special thanks to Michael R. Kearney ’17 (Wilkinsburg, PA), alumni council member, for initiating The McCartney Society and being part of its continued growth, now virtually.
