Biography

Dr. Zaffini teaches political theory, international relations, and constitutional law, among other topics. His research focuses on the history of political ideas concerning the nature of authority, virtue, and freedom. In particular, his work critically examines liberal and republican theory through the lens of the Reformed theological tradition. He is currently working on a book arguing for a recovery of the virtue ethics central to historic Christian thought.

In the classroom, Dr. Zaffini encourages students to wrestle with big, enduring questions. His courses encourage students to engage closely with classic works and grapple with competing ideas, all as way of equipping them for thoughtful participation in politics.

Before entering academia, Dr. Zaffini served as an infantry sergeant in the Ohio Army National Guard and worked briefly in both journalism and political consulting. These experiences continue to enrich his understanding of the practical realities of politics. Dr. Zaffini, his wife and their five children are members of College Hill Reformed Church.
