As a youngster Andrew Bernard ’83 dreamed of working for one of “The Big Eight” accounting firms. During his college search he spoke with the head of Geneva’s business department who said, “If it was God’s will for me to be an accounting partner in one of ‘The Big Eight’ firms than it would be,” says Bernard. Those words and God’s peace led him to pursue his education at Geneva.

Geneva was the perfect choice for Andrew. “I thought my classes were taught well. I enjoyed my time on the football team, and the relationships I developed at Geneva, which I still have today nearly 35 years later,” he reflects.

Shortly after graduating, Andrew achieved his dream when he was offered his first position as an accountant for one of “The Big Eight” firms, Ernst and Whinney, as well as tuition money for his Master’s Degree in Taxation.

In 2010 Andrew began working as Managing Director with Anderson Tax, one of the largest independent tax firms in the United States. Today, he specializes in international practice areas including taxable and tax-free international mergers, acquisitions and restructuring for global corporations, partnerships and S corporations.

He was contacted by a fellow alumnus to see if he could help his son’s roommate, Tim Martin, find an accounting internship.

Tim, a Geneva football player, was in his third year of pursuing a double major in Accounting and Business with a concentration in Management.  Tim quickly saw the opportunities that would await him at Anderson Tax. Geneva encourages internships, and he knew an accounting internship would prepare him for professional success. “I knew that if I wanted to start my career off on the right foot, I would have to get at least one internship,” Tim says.

Tim concluded his internship ready to finish his last year at Geneva. “It was an awesome experience through and through to work alongside a Geneva alumnus and former Geneva football player,” he says.

Martin plans to graduate from Geneva in May 2017, and he’ll be looking to work at an Accounting firm. And thanks to Geneva’s solid preparation, his own hard work and a mentor who took the journey ahead of him, Tim is ready to begin the career path God has planned for him.
